ESL

Happy Winter! Here's what's happening in ESL at Faubion.

ESL Classes

Kindergarten through 5th grade ESL students are learning transportation vocabulary this month.  Students will learn nouns, verbs and adverbs in order to tell about various forms of transportation, how it moves, and where.

Beginning level students will learn nouns like airplane, bus, boat, and train; verbs like fly, roll, race, and move; and adverbs like fast, slowly, loudly and quietly

Intermediate level students will learn a bit more complex vocabulary.  Nouns include helicopter, ambulance, sailboat,  and space shuttle. Intermediate levels verbs will include steer, glide, drift, and hover. Intermediate level students will learn adverbs like rapidly, carefully, recklessly, and smoothly.

Early Advanced level vocabulary includes nouns like cargo plane, kayak, tractor,  and ferry; verbs like operate, pilot, traverse, and careen; and adverbs like speedily, noisily, cautiously, and efficiently.

As students become familiar with this vocabulary, we will begin to use it in order to compare and contrast different forms of transportation.  In order to do this, students will be learning the vocabulary and language forms we use in English to compare and contrast.

Your child will sometimes bring home booklets and other materials to read to you.  If he/she reads any ESL work to you, please sign it and send it back to school with him/her.  Students that can show they read their materials to family members will get to choose from my prize box!

Parent Meetings

We had fun at our last parents meeting playing games with our school nurse Janice Klumpp.  She spoke to parents about nutrition for children and families.  In addition, Karen Cosper, who taught ESL at Faubion for many years, was here.  She talked about the upcoming ELPA tests that all ESL students will take at the end of February.  Parents ate and visited and received information about free English classes and written instructions about viewing the Faubion website in Spanish.

February will be a very busy month with ELPA testing, so our next ESL meeting will be in early to mid March.  Hilda, Nurse Janice and I look forward to seeing you then!

Other News

Thanks to parent volunteers Marisa Demara, Brett Nelson and Jenny Ogren, our Bulldog Barker will be translated into Spanish for the first time this month!  Due to the time it takes to translate and reformat, the Spanish version may go out up to a week after the English version, but look for it in your child's backpack soon!
