Article Review

After reading an article in the Oregonian on How to raise healthy children in a consumer culture, I wanted to share some of the ideas they noted. They are good things for us all to keep in mind.

Kate Rinder, the NW Earth Institute’s outreach coordinator provided these tips for raising children in a consumer culture:

What you can parents do?
  • Have a strong network of family and friends. The more reinforcement from others for your values, the more supported and the less different your children will feel.
  • Lead by example. Volunteer, demonstrate, and write letters to public officials.
  • Try a TV-free week in your home. Coordinate with other families to encourage non-TV activities.
  • Buy toys secondhand or swap with neighbors, friends and family.
  • Devote 20 minutes before bedtime exclusively to your children.
  • Eat dinner together as often as possible.
  • Exercise your sense of wonder. Make a special date with your child to stay up late and watch the stars.
  • If your children want to play video games, rent the necessary equipment form a video store instead of buying it.
