Kate Rinder, the NW Earth Institute’s outreach coordinator provided these tips for raising children in a consumer culture:
What you can parents do?
- Have a strong network of family and friends. The more reinforcement from others for your values, the more supported and the less different your children will feel.
- Lead by example. Volunteer, demonstrate, and write letters to public officials.
- Try a TV-free week in your home. Coordinate with other families to encourage non-TV activities.
- Buy toys secondhand or swap with neighbors, friends and family.
- Devote 20 minutes before bedtime exclusively to your children.
- Eat dinner together as often as possible.
- Exercise your sense of wonder. Make a special date with your child to stay up late and watch the stars.
- If your children want to play video games, rent the necessary equipment form a video store instead of buying it.
