3rd Grade February begins our third quarter. We’re halfway through the year. We will be shifting our content focus from social studies (Portland geography and history) to science this month. Our first unit of study is of rocks and minerals. Students will be using the science inquiry process to examine different materials, perform a variety of experiments, organize their findings, and write an analysis of their results. Multiplication and division are the math skills we are building this month. We teach the children that multiplication is looking at groups of things. For instance, a hand has a group of five fingers on it. If there are five hands in the air, how many fingers are there? Another way to help children use groups of numbers is to work with using coins. If I have five nickels, how much money do I have? Students in Room 20 will have 500 new additions to our classroom early in February. During the first week of the month, our fish tank will again be home to hatching fish. This time we will be raising rainbow trout. As with the salmon eggs we hatched in October/November, we will be keeping data that will be submitted to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife when the trout are released. We are excited to be able to share this unique opportunity for scientific observation and data collection with our friends in Room 13. We invite you to stop by and check it out.
