Mrs. Makara
February-March
First grade is buzzing with learning and activity in March. In month of March we will be going on two field trips. The first field in to the Oregon Ballet on March 1st. The second is to OMSI on March 8th. With so much learning and excitement, please remember that school begins at 8:30. Your child is late as of 8:45. Please make sure that your child is on time for school. If your child is arriving late they are missing out on valuable instruction time. If you are late, please allow your child to enter the classroom alone. This will cut down on classroom interruption and we can continue to teach.
Our new Reading Unit focus is “Treasures”. We will be discussing, learning and reading about “Treasures”. “Treasures” are thing that are valuable to us. It could be gifts, friendships, things we found and saved. For phonics we will be learning the various phonic spelling for Long vowels, Compound words and the Suffixes -ly and-ful. Please have your child read to you nightly. This will help your child build fluency as a reader. If you need help in book selection, please ask.
In Writing we are learning how to write “How to’s”. A “How to” is a set of simple instruction or directions. This is the first of two unit that address Informational Writing. During this unit please, point out any directions and ask your child what they notice about them.
In Math, we are starting our Penguin unit. In this unit we will be learning about length, height and weight. We will be comparing the size of different penguins. This is an integrated unit with science, so we will also be learning facts about Penguins.
In Science, we are starting the Pebbles, Sand and Silt unit. In this Unit we will be exploring earth science through comparing and contrast different types of soil.
For Visual Art we will have Concordia Students teaching various forms of Visual Arts for 45 minutes a week.
Please join us of March 2nd for our Special Friends and Family day from 8:45- 11:00. We will be celebrating Dr. Seuss through fun activities and reading together. Thank you for your support and help we could not do it without you.
