This is a list of books that, except for The I Hate Mathematics Book, I have personally read and found to be wonderful. I highly recommend them.

Math on Call
This is a reference book that you can use from now until you are in college; it is like a dictionary (it has definitions) and like a textbook (it shows how to do things like find area or add fractions). We sell it at East Sylvan ( although it is currently sold out as of 9/23/09), but you can buy it at Powell's or on Amazon.

Math Doesn't Suck, by Danica McKellar
Danica McKellar is an actress who played Winnie in the television show The Wonder Years. She went to college and majored in math. She noticed that many girls, in particular, weren't going into the mathematics (or science) fields and wanted to do something about it. She wrote this book specifically for girls.

Lots of girls wrote Danica emails, asking her questions, and she wrote them back. Then, she realized that she could write a second book, addressing pre-algebra, so she wrote Kiss My Math, too.

Math Doesn't Suck covers almost all of what we do in sixth grade math, but it does it in a fun way. You can read any part you want, read it from beginning to end, or even write Danica or visit her website. What's really great about this book is (shh!) that boys can read it, too.

Kiss My Math, by Danica McKellar
This book is about Pre-Algebra, which we cover in the advanced sixth grade math class. It should be read after Math Doesn't Suck.

Math for Smarty Pants, by Marilyn Burns

This book is for people who like to play mathematical games, solve mathematical puzzles or test their capabilities with interesting mathematical problems. It's a lot of fun (and I use some of the activities in my classroom). It's the kind of book you can leaf through and find something you want to try.

The I Hate Mathematics Book, by Marilyn Burns

I haven't read this book yet, but Marilyn Burns is a wonderful math writer (she teaches teachers how to make math fun). It sounds great!
