DUNIWAY P.E. OVERVIEW

Physical Education at Duniway Elementary School is taught to all children in grades K-5, with each class being serviced two times per week, 30 minutes per class.

P.E. at Duniway is an activity and success-based program. This means that through developmental/skill appropriate activity, children achieve success on an individual level, thus encouraging full participation. P.E. is not an athletic program, nor is it recess. It is for all students to enjoy regardless of experience, athletic ability, or skill level.

At all grade levels, the P.E. curriculum focuses on three standards: movement experiences, fitness activities/concepts, and cooperative/social experiences.

Depending on grade level, the movement experiences incorporate everything from beginning locomotor movements like skipping and hopping, to dance and rhythmic movements, high and low skill games, equipment manipulation, sport lead-up skills, and a host of other activities.

Social and cooperative experiences include activities where children must work independently, with a partner, or in a group, in a physical activity setting. This includes use and care of equipment, following directions, and problem solving activities.

Fitness activities and concepts vary widely and include, fitness testing, yoga, resistance training, simple anatomy and many others. By the time students leave Duniway, I would like them to have an understanding that adopting a healthy lifestyle will positively effect health risk factors. And, that they will have the tools to make wise choices about their health.

Please feel free to come observe or join your child’s P.E. class anytime.
