Tech Talk: PPS Student Active Directory, Google Accounts, and GAFE ACCESS

Any student enrolled in Synergy as of August 14 already has an Active Directory account, access to Google Apps (apps4pps.net), StudentVUE, Destiny for Library check-out, and a Y drive for saving their school work when using our school network of computers.

StudentVUE & ParentVue - we strongly encourage all of our families to set up a weekly Synergy check with their students to check in on progress, celebrate successes, and problem solve areas of concern: http://www.pps.k12.or.us/departments/information-technology/8258.htm

In August 2015, PPS reset all student passwords to a common default:  Pps######
where the numbers are the student's PPS ID number, which can be found on PPS ID cards.
School staff and teachers can all access student ID numbers and usernames if a student doesn't know this information. We expect that all students will have their network credentials (username & password) memorized by mid-October so that they can use our school technology with any of their teachers!

Students enrolled after August 14 will receive the default password but will need to activate their apps4pps.net account by going to:https://activatestudentgafe.pps.net/

The district-set default passwords for students in grades 6-12 will expire on October 1, 2015. If students have not changed their password from the default, they will then be required to re-set their password before they are able to log-in to Synergy StudentVue, their GoogleApps account, or the school computers. Please support your student in using the Student Password Manager tool described below before Wednesday October 1 so that they and their teachers do not encounter any delay in computer use during class-time. Default passwords for students in grades K-5 will not expire.

PPS Password Manager for Students

Students at all PPS schools are encouraged to use https://password.pps.net to set up their question/answer profile so they can perform self-service password resets.  Besides being a great service for them, it eliminates the need for teachers and staff to reset their passwords. Students will need to know their username which is usually (all lowercase) the first letter of their first name directly followed by their entire last name with no hyphens or special punctuation.

There are new student-friendly security questions for password resets! As a best practice, students should change their password as soon as possible after school starts each year. Both staff and students (K-12) should register with the Password Manager (https://password.pps.net) and set up their security questions in order to reset their passwords on their own. Click here to watch the password reset video. Again, it is critical that students memorize the new passwords whenever they change it!

The password complexity policy for grades 6-12 is the same as staff:
Passwords must be a minimum of 8 characters and have at least three of the following:
English uppercase characters (A through Z)
English lowercase characters (a through z)
Base 10 digits (0 through 9)
Non-alphabetic characters (for example, !, $, #, %)

If a Parent does not have a ParentVUE login, please contact Sheli Bryan in the Main Office sbryan@pps.net and ask for an activation key to create your account.  If you are having trouble with old bookmarks, please note that as of July 2015, the ParentVue login page has a new url: https://parent-portland.cascadetech.org and the new StudentVue login page url is: https://student-portland.cascadetech.org

How do students login to StudentVUE?
StudentVUE is available to students in Grades 6 and above. Students can login to StudentVUE using their regular PPS username and password. If you do not know your PPS username and password, please stop in the cafeteria at lunch time to see Asst. Principal Alicia McMillen or Counselor Katie OR ask our new Media Specialist Lori Lieberman in the Library!

How to login to the ParentVUE/StudentVUE mobile app?
To use the Android or iOS app, please select Portland Public Schools from the list of Oregon districts,
or enter the district office zip code of 97227.
