The fifth event is a Family Lunch scheduled for Thursday, July 14th at 12 p.m.; this event will be an opportunity for our families to meet and enjoy a time of camaraderie at our Ockley Green campus.
2016-17 School Year Information
IMPORTANT UPDATES REGARDING SCHOOL START TIMES FOR THE 2016-2017 YEAR
CHIEF JOSEPH: For the 2016-2017 school year, the first bell will be at 8:40 and the tardy bell will be at 8:45 a.m.; dismissal will be at 3:00 p.m.
OCKLEY GREEN: "I am happy to announce that our Ockley Green Middle School will begin its instructional day at 9:15 a.m. Our school day will be from 9:15 a.m. - 3:45 p.m. Here's looking to a pristine 2016-17!" -- René Canler
We have planned to implement a staggered start in the fall, with
- 5th & 6th graders beginning Monday, Aug. 29
- 7th graders beginning Tuesday, Aug. 30
- 8th graders beginning Wednesday, Aug. 31

Great Schools II updates on the transition process in multiple languages
including the addition of music (band and choir) being added to Ockely Green.
This week’s transition news: a principal input meeting April 21 at Chief
Joseph, an improved online survey in multiple languages if you missed the
meeting, and the announcement of a new Project Director.

You are all invited to give input about the kind of leader you would like to see as principal of Chief Joseph. The meeting is Thursday, April 21st, 6:30 p.m. at Chief Joseph, 2409 N. Saratoga. Superintendent Carole Smith will also be present at the meeting.
Childcare and interpretation will be provided.

As you know, the Portland School Board voted April 5 to change Ockley Green to a stand-alone middle school for the 2016-2017 school year which starts August 29. That also means that Beach, Chief Joseph, Peninsula and Woodlawn will change to K-5 elementary schools. No doubt you have questions. Principals Chun, Martinez, Asson and Porter-Lopez are meeting with administrators weekly to talk about the implementation process which includes staffing, school programs, transportation and plans for getting the buildings ready and moving over the summer. Principals are currently coordinating technology and year-end celebrations for students at each school. They are also working with PTA and Site Council for a smooth transition.
We know that students and parents are concerned about the teachers at their school. Principals, the teachers' union (PAT) and Human Resources are working on staffing. Teachers have the right to decline assignments and apply for jobs at other schools, so staffing won’t be final until the summer.Please mark your calendars for two parent/staff input meetings about new principals for Ockley Green and Chief Joseph and an Open House for Ockley Green Middle School.

Community Zone Clothes Closet
Our Community Zone Clothes Closet is open Monday nights after SUN School until 6 p.m., Tuesday mornings from 9-10 a.m., or by appointment (email firstname.lastname@example.org to schedule an appointment). It is located in Portable 3 at the 4-8 campus and is open to any family in our cluster! We are happy to make arrangements to have specific items brought to the K-3 campus during the day.
