Hello Beach, Chief Joseph, Ockley Green, Peninsula and Woodlawn families, teachers and staff:

Did you notice the yellow rectangular alert pod at the top of your school website that reads Ockley Green Transition? It links you to the latest Growing Great Schools II updates on the transition process in multiple languages including the addition of music (band and choir) being added to Ockely Green.

This week’s transition news: a principal input meeting April 21 at Chief Joseph, an improved online survey in multiple languages if you missed the meeting, and the announcement of a new Project Director.

Just go to your school website, click the link in the alert pod and get the news.

Hello Families, Teachers and Staff:

You are all invited to give input about the kind of leader you would like to see as principal of Chief Joseph. The meeting is Thursday, April 21st, 6:30 p.m. at Chief Joseph, 2409 N. Saratoga. Superintendent Carole Smith will also be present at the meeting.

Childcare and interpretation will be provided.

To learn more about the transition to the new middle school, go to www.pps.net and click on the "Growing Great Schools" link.

Hello Families,

As you know, the Portland School Board voted April 5 to change Ockley Green to a stand-alone middle school for the 2016-2017 school year which starts August 29. That also means that Beach, Chief Joseph, Peninsula and Woodlawn will change to K-5 elementary schools. No doubt you have questions. You can find more information at http://www.pps.net/ and click on Boundary Review-Growing Great Schools, which is under Trending Links.

Principals Chun, Martinez, Asson and Porter-Lopez are meeting with administrators weekly to talk about the implementation process which includes staffing, school programs, transportation and plans for getting the buildings ready and moving over the summer. Principals are currently coordinating technology and year-end celebrations for students at each school. They are also working with PTA and Site Council for a smooth transition.

We know that students and parents are concerned about the teachers at their school. Principals, the teachers' union (PAT) and Human Resources are working on staffing. Teachers have the right to decline assignments and apply for jobs at other schools, so staffing won’t be final until the summer.

Please mark your calendars for two parent/staff input meetings about new principals for Ockley Green and Chief Joseph and an Open House for Ockley Green Middle School.

Principal input at Ockley Green:  April 14 at 6:30pm, 6031 N. Montana

Principal input at Chief Joseph:  April 21 at 6:30pm, 2409 N. Saratoga St.

Ockley Green Open House:  May 4 at 6pm, 6031 N. Montana

Please know that we take your concerns seriously. We are working on a communications plan to update families. We appreciate your feedback and patience during this process.
