Q: What is the title of my favorite book?
A: I have many "favorites" but I truly love reading biographies and historical novels. One of my favorites is The Winds of War and War and Remembrance.by Herman Wouk. I also enjoy A People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn. One of my favorite professional readings are the works of Parker Palmer (Courage to Lead.)
Q: Who is an educational leader who has had a particularly lasting impact on you and what is one idea or experience that you have learned from them? A: Carolyn Sheldon (retired Director of Student Services in PPS) gave me my first opportunity to work in Portland Public Schools over 30 years ago. I credit her with helping me focus my talents and energies initially into school counseling. Carolyn modeled passion, dedication to the service of children and compassion for supporting all students to achieve school success.
Q: What year did I start in education? What year did I start at Capitol Hill?
A: 1977- elementary school counselor. 2001 - Administrator - Director of Student Services for PPS. 2005 - Principal at Capitol Hill School. I was the school counselor at Capitol Hill School from 1986 - 2001. Never in a million years did I anticpate this wonderful cycle in my career - returning to Capitol Hill as the instructional leader after serving for as the counselor here for 16 years!
