A Short Q & A with Mrs. Burak

Q: What is the title and author of your favorite read aloud in recent years?

The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo.  It is a fantastic story of the life of a toy bunny, Edward, as he changes hand, from owner to owner.  The story is really about how he changes as a person over time.

Who is a teacher that influenced you?

Mrs. Anderson, my art teacher from St. Mary's Academy.  She loved and trusted me, at least I felt that she did.  She gave me lots of special privileges, like being yearbook photographer.  She also taught me calligraphy, which I loved to practice.  I think my calligraphy still shines through, when people notice my nice penmanship.

What book has been most influential on your teaching? 

I have been rereading How's It Going? by Carl Anderson.  It is about how to run an effective writer's workshop, specifically how to conference with student writers, and help students make changes to make their good writing even better.
