About our CLC Classes

The Arts

The arts are such an integral part of our Community Learning Center that we have created a special name to identify it: The Extended Day Arts Program. Within this program, students discover classes such as drama, vocal and instrumental music, and a wide variety of visual art classes including ceramics, painting, basketry and drawing. Our instrumental music program is taught by an organization called M.U.S.E. which provides outstanding instruction from professional musicians and educators. A lunchtime choir, open to K - 5th graders in Capitol Hill (directed by Ralph Nelson and hosted by the CLC) began in Fall, 2002. In addition, classes are offered in harmonica and guitar. Please contact our CLC office for more informaiton.

Academics

Several academic classes to complement and supplement the regular classroom curriculum are offered through our CLC. Daily homework clubs that provide students with a quiet environment, uninterrupted time and help by volunteers and tutors are very popular with teachers, parents and students. Other academic areas include computer technology, and science.

Sports and Recreation

Sports and recreation classes play a very imporant role in our Community Learning Center. Some of our more popular sports classes include aikido (a non-violent Japanese martial art form), as well as dance, and sports & games . Several of these classes are taught by experienced parents, teachers, retired teachers and community members. Not only do these classes provides students with skill building and physical fitness opportunities, it also allows them to interact with their friends after school in a productive, positive environment.

Hobbies

The CLC offers several "hobby" type classes that expose students to activities parents often don't have time for today, such as Lego Club, juggling, hula hoop, cribbage and/or cooking. The Community Learning Center is always interested in new class ideas that parents or communtiy members may have and are interested in teaching.
