Community Learning Center Overview

Capitol Hill School’s unique, award-winning after-school Community Learning Center (CLC) and Extended Day Arts Program provides students with enrichment opportunities in art, music, sports, recreation and academics. Commended by parents, students and teachers for its high quality instructors, large selection of classes, community partnerships and scholarship program to help disadvantaged youth, the CLC has become an integral part of Capitol Hill Elementary School and its Southwest Portland community. During the 2008-2009 school year, over 120 after-school activities were offered and approximately 80% of the student body participated in one or more classes.

The CLC appeals to children and parents for a number of reasons:

  1. It occurs directly after the regular school day (M-Th from 2:20-3:20 pm with a few exceptions) which is not only convenient for parents but allows friends to take classes together.
  2. Scholarships and transportation are available to students on free or reduced lunch (the average class costs approximately $45/term).
  3. We offer a wide variety of classes with high quality instruction. Teachers, parents and community members are often instructors in our CLC sharing their expertise, skill and experience.
  4. All CLC activities are open to students at Capitol Hill School as well as students from other public and private schools. Home-schooled students are also welcome.

Please email Debra Crockett at dcrockett@pps.net if you would like to receive our schedule of classes.
