PTA Special Events in 2012-13
After-School Winter Enrichment: The PTA’s Winter Enrichment program offers Bridlemile students an eight-week series of diverse and challenging enrichment classes conveniently scheduled immediately after school from late-January through Spring Break. Yearly class offerings vary, but typically include art, science, engineering, crafts, strategy, literature, dance, and martial arts. Instructors range from parent and community members sharing a profession or talent to established providers like Saturday Academy. Class fees sustain the program by funding instructor and supply fees, a daily on-site logistics monitor, registration and room-use expenses, and financial assistance to all students who require it. Many instructors help keep their class costs lower by donating all or part of their time – thank you!! Look for this winter’s class offerings and registration information in December! Chair: Linda Brauser, ase.bridlemile@icloud.com
Apparel: Find all the right Bridlemile apparel for you and your children with the help of chair, Amanda Reveno: areveno@hotmail.com Apparel sales will be announced in the school newsletter.
Bookfair - October 29- November 2: Each year, usually coinciding with Teacher Conference Week, the PTA holds a book fair in the Cafeteria. Books of all types, sizes and reading levels are available for purchase. Also available: computer software, posters, gift items and more. Please note that a percentage of your purchase come back to Bridlemile for use by the Library to purchase books, software and educational support material not only for the library but also for the teaching staff. Chair: Marty Jeffcock: p2@jeffcockfamily.net
Box Tops: Please consider clipping and sending in your Box Tops. For a list of participating products go to http://www.boxtops4education.com/Image.aspx?id=3878. The Bridlemile PTA coordinated the Box Top projects and they order school materials with the Box Tops. Chair: Leslie Weak
Bridlemile Foundation Community Auction March 16, 2013: The Bridlemile School Community Auction has become one of the highlights of the school year. Our auction brings together almost 300 parents, teachers, and friends. The best part of the auction is that the proceeds are used at Bridlemile to help staff Bridlemile with teachers and specialists. All classes at Bridlemile get involved by making their own projects, which are highly sought after. The success of the auction is clearly a reflection of the hard work of the many volunteers. Please contact Lisa Perrin at landbperrin@yahoo.com
Bridlemile Bulletin: The monthly bulletin is produced the PTA and it includes information about school events, PTA news, and Foundation updates. Most families receive the bulletin electronically, but hard copies are available upon request. Thanks to Jennifer Avery for putting this monthly document together: jonjenave@msn.com
Clothes Closet: The Bridlemile Clothes Closet takes gently used children's clothing and shoes and redistributes them to families in need in the Bridlemile community. Although PPS has a clothing closet at Marshall High School, this location is too far for most Bridlemile families. Volunteers sort clothing and then invite children that have parent permission to "shop" in the closet. All children visiting the closet receive new packages of underwear. Donations of gently used clothing or new socks and underwear are greatly appreciated and they may be dropped off in the office. Chair: Leslie Weak and Brett Corrick thewarrensljf@mac.com
Community Outreach: This committee reaches out to families in need at Bridlemile. They solicit interested families in the fall and then help with school supplies, books, clothing, and tickets for Bridlemile events. Chair: Rhonda Houck: h.rhonda@comast.net
Field Day - June 13, 2013: Each year the PTA works with the PE teacher to put on a field day for K-2 and 3-5 grades. Both events will take place in the afternoon on Thursday, June 13. Parent Chair: Sue Denton
Fifth Grade Transition: It is a custom at Bridlemile for fifth grade students to raise funds and give a gift to the school. Recent class gifts have included the bridge and posts near the front entrance and books for the library and fifth grade rooms. Fifth graders also have many fun traditions the last weeks of school. Chairs: Tracy Fenty and Cynthia Moon
Freaky Friday - May 3: Bridlemile’s School Carnival. This is a fun time for all family members. Games, face painting, magic tricks and food are just some of the activities offered in past years. Tickets are sold in advance through the PTA newsletter. Tickets can also be purchased at the door.
Bridlemile Used Book Sale - May 2 - 6: If you are looking for a good cause for books your family has finished or if you are looking to find some great reads, the Bridlemile Freaky Friday Used Book Sale is the place to be. During the second half of April we invite families and the community to drop off used books. Let the sorting begin! With a monumental volunteer effort from the Bridlemile PTA these books are then sorted for the Freaky Friday Used Book Sale which coincides with Freaky Friday Carnival. The primary purpose of this event is to exchange books within our own community. It is also a fundraiser for the Bridlemile PTA. Volunteers are always needed during these very busy two weeks. Chairs: Marie Elena Potter and Katrina Knewtson: kknewtso@yahoo.com and Cheryl Collier
Flouride: Working with the Multnomah County Educational Service District, PPS provides flouride each week during the school year. Interested families should complete the permission form that comes home on the first day of school. Parents come in weekly to distribute the flouride to classrooms. Chair: Karen Hughes: whitesalmon@comcast.net
Fall Fundraiser: Chico Bags - Chair: Allison King
Garden Planting: Over the course of the last few years the garden area around Bridlemile has seen changes. First the boxes were added and then the bioswale was completed (2009) and then a perennial garden was started (2010). A bridge was put in place with the help of the fifth grade class of 2009. A tree was planted in early 2010 in memory of Ginger Danzer. What a great example of one beautiful change after another. The continued vision includes a semi circle seating area where teachers could meet in an outdoor arena with a classroom and continued expansion of the perennial area. Every change has been thoroughly enjoyed by the school and the community. Want to be a part of the work? For either ongoing maintenance or new ideas talk with garden coordinator and chair: Leslie Weak and Carol Brand
Green Team: The Bridlemile Green Team meets monthly to discuss ways to make our community and school more "green." They sponsor the annual Waste Free Lunch days which typically take place once a month from January - May. They have been instrumental in getting the Bridlemile dishwasher upgraded so styrofoam trays can be permanently be replaced with permawear trays. They have also held a styrofoam drive each year on a Saturday. Chair: Jennifer Whitten
Health and Wellness: The Health and Wellness Committee was started in 2009-10. The committee completed an audit of Bridlemile's health and wellness us the Alliance for a Healthier Generation. This gave committee members and idea of Bridlemile's strengths and weaknesses. This is the group that promotes the annual bike and walk events. This work will be continued in 2012-13. Chairs: Debra Rhea: debrarhea@comcast.net and Ted Savage
Kindergarten Welcoming Committee: During the summer parents from Bridelmile host several playdates for incoming kindergarten students. This is a good way for incoming students to meet other students. They will likely be together for many years, perhaps as many as 13 (K-12)! Chairs for 2012: Debbie Flinders, Heidi Barker, Sarah Boyle Dates: August 14 (3-5 pm), August 23 (10 - 12), August 29 (5:30 - 7:30 pm) debbieflinders@gmail.com
Missoula Theater: Missoula Theater is a PTA sponsored week where a traveling theater group comes in, selects a cast and puts on a performance in one week. The fun starts on Monday when any Bridlemile student may try out for a part. The cast is selected that day and then rehearsals begin for Tuesday - Friday. Friday evening and Saturday afternoon the cast has an opportunity to perform for an audience. This is a fabulous opportunity for students to be a part of a large production that takes only one week of time. The 2012-13 Missoula Theater Week will take place April 1 - 6 with two shows, one on Friday, April 6 (6:30 pm) and Saturday, April 7 (1:00 pm) - dates are subject to change. Chairs: Jill Castrina jillcastrina@nike.com and Twink Hinds
Music Program: The PTA helps decorate for each of the three musicals during the school year. This group confers with Ms. Barlow, Bridlemile music teacher, and then finds decorations to match the theme. This is how the cafeteria always looks so festive on music program nights! Dates for 2012-13: 4/5 music program: Dec. 6; K/1 music program: March 14; 2/3 music program: May 9. Thanks to chair Amy Blauer and Sarah Batten
Outreach: Bridlemile PTA reaches out to families in need throughout the school year. This includes three trips through the clothing closet for each season, holiday food baskets, school supplies, school event scholarships. Please complete the form that comes home with opening packets if your are interested in any or all of these outreach efforts. Chair: Rhonda Houck: yosmites@comcast.net
Reader Board: Several years ago the PTA generously donated the reader board at the corner of the Bridlemile property. This group confers with the office and keeps the sign updated. Thanks to chair Casey Barbieri, caseyb@answerjack.com
Room Parent Coordination: Room parents play a key role at Bridlemile. They help organize classroom volunteers and they host three room parties. In addition they solicit volunteers for lunch and recess duty and help out with many other key communications and volunteer duties. Who coordinates room parents? The very capable Jennifer Avery is the chair of this committee.
School Directory: Each year the PTA publishes a school directory with information from all families that have approved inclusion. This is a key way for families to share information to other families. Chair for 2012: Lisa Belding
Screen Free Week - in April: This event encourages families to do without their TV for a week. A week in April will be announced as the spring approaches. Discover the world of no TV and unlock the imagination of your child. Watch for a family evening event during this week. Coordinator: Kristin Miller
Science Night: This is a fair for the celebration of discovery and creativity. All fifth graders have a chance to show off their cool science projects, see science demos, try out some brainteasers, and more. The 2012 Science Fair Night will take place on January 24. It is an Open House format so families may drop by during the evening to view science fair projects and see other cool science displays. Chair: Larry Sherman sherman1@ohsu.edu.
Spaghetti Extravanga - January 15: Join Bridlemile families and neighbors in a night of spaghetti, music, and fun. This year the dinner will take place on Monday, January 15. Ann Taggart-Wessel and Wendy Tolls do a fabulous job of coordinating this event: taggartwessel@comcast.net
Tree Sale and Pancake Breakfast: This is a Foundation Fundraiser - Stop by and enjoy a hearty, freshly cooked breakfast and find your holiday greenery. The 2012-13 Pancake Breakfast will take place on Saturday, December 1-2, 2012. Greenery (trees and wreaths) will be sold on both Saturday and Sunday, December 1 and 2.
