Big Ideas in Second Grade
Writing: At the beginning of the year in second grade we spend a lot of time setting up our writers workshop. We talk at great length about the fact that we are all authors and we all have a story to tell.
Reading: In second grade we "Walk to Read" By the second week of school your child should be in an ability based reading group. This ensures that all students are getting direct reading instruction at their level. Make sure you introduce yourself to Ms. Wilke if your child is in her reading room!
Math: The district adopted a new Math Curriculum this year! It is called Bridges and I am so excited to be teaching
Science: We spend time in second grade exploring balance and motion, weather, habitats and trees. The children create habitats in small groups and observe the life cycles within these habitats.
Art: The children will learn about different artists from various cultures throughout the year. By the end of second grade the students will have had chance to explore different mediums in creating works of art. If you have a creative idea for an art project or are passionate about a certain type of art and want to share this the class let me know! We will have an artist in residence this year focusing on some type of visual art.
