Classroom Updates

February 21, 2012

Hello Families,

Happy Fat Tuesday!  Last week, I gave many updates about upcoming activities, projects, and due dates, but not a lot of information about what's going on with the curriculum in class.

Writing/Language Arts/Literature:

We're very busy in this area with several projects and assignments.  Students started biographical sketches last week and interviewed a classmate.  I've taught them two new writing techniques for the intro and end:  anecdotes and looping.  Rough drafts are due Wednesday.  Revision and editing lessons will come this week with this activity as well.  Final drafts will be due typed next week sometime.  Final drafts of these will be used in our writer's anathologies we're creating as our "About the Author" pages.

Today, we learned about memoirs and are practicing writing out own 6-word memoirs (6WM).  I got this idea from a book about 6WM.  The idea for the book came from Hemingway beign challenged to write a six word swtory and he wrote:  "For sale:  baby shoes, never worn."  I used these to focus on powerful punctuation and descriptive juice word choice.  When your limited by how much you can say, your words need to pack a punch.  We'll use this in other subject areas like science, social studies, and with characters from novels.  Try to write your own, it's fun!  I'm hoping to use this as one of our blog assignments as well as make a class book and Powerpoint.

Speaking of blog assignments, please contact me if your child will need an alternate way to do this project if they are not allowed to have an email account.

We finished our first round of lit circle groups.  Before we start another, we're doing a culmination activity.  Groups are writng a letter to the author about what they liked, questions they had, and any suggestions they have.  We're learning about the parts of a letter and we'll actually mail our letters!

No reading log this week.  No spelling this week, but words for next week will be given on Friday.  Wordly wise lesson 7 this week.

Social Studies/Science:

Science fair experimentation can begin and should be concluded by Tuesday, March 6.  This is two full weeks of data collecting if needed.  I'll give students hypotheses that we're turned in on time and approved in class tomorrow.  Last week students wrote materials list and procedures.  The procedures should be written so clear that anybody can take their written directions and recreate the experiment.  Data collection is important.  Many projects can easily use a chart, table, or graph.  Some projects lend themselves better to photography.  Your child may need reminders to collect their data, especially if it's a daily check.  Students should keep all of these science fair written components because eventually they will type them out to put on their tri-fold boards.  Tri-fold boards can be purchased at any office store and need to be in class by Friday, March 9.

In social studies, we're getting ready to kick off some interactive projects about The Oregon Trail and The American Revolution.  I want the second half of the year to be more focused on integrating the reading and writing around social studies and science content.  I'm structuring the project to include independent inquiry, team work, and of course ART!!!

That's what's new and going on in our room this week.  I hope students are feeling better this week.  There was definitely a virus going around last week.  The auction glass projects are done and both the bowl and platter look amazing!  Beverly Benefit invitations went home last week.  Mark your calendar for Friday, March 9!

Hello Parents/Guardians,

Sorry I missed you today at dismissal, I was home with a sick child.  Here's what's going on this week and other news, requests, and frivilous information.

Science fair news:     The hypothesis is due tomorrow.  Students had 3 days last week to research background information starting with a key word search.  I'll approve hypotheses and teach how to record data before they can start their experiments.  Please remember some experiments need the supervision of an adult, especially the fire one! However, the science fair is for students.  The adult science fair is this summer!  :-)  Seriously, I'm encouraging students to take pictures and be consistent in recording their data.  The students understand this is their project and responsibility but adult reminders about collecting data is helpful.  With approximately 4 weeks until the project is due, students will have a 2 week window to record and collect data from their experiment, so we can analyze and draw conclusions.  Students will need to purchase a tri-fold board.  If this is a problem, please let me know.

Planners:      Since the start of the second semester last week, I'm still taking time to go over the planner in class and strongly encourage it's use, but I'm no longer signing/initialing the planner.  This is a transition to move the students to taking on more responsibility.  The planner is a great tool for organization and due dates.  I understand that a few students might need to continue to have my initials.  I can accomodate that on a needs basis.

Jr. Great book Parent faciliator meeting:     This Wednesday after dismissal, there will be a short meeting until 3:30 to figure out and coordinate parents who would like to help facilitate Jr. Great books.  We'll discuss dates and times people are available and what training and/or reading needs to be covered before we start.  Your child is welcome to hang out while we meet.  I will run literature circles again after this session and a culmination project that parents can help with as well.

Student Email:     I'd love to teach students about blogs and incorporate literature with this cool technology using Blog spot.  However, it does require each student to open an email account with Google.  I taught my 8th graders this last year and have all the security and safety functions figured out, so student information is not on the internet for ALL to see.  I'd like to know feedback about how parents feel about this since I have some young students.  You can check out my blog spot from last year at http://teacherkobs.blogspot.com/.  I don't have any of my literature posts from the 8th grade literature assignments, but you can get a feel for what the site looks like.  Parents can sign up to be followers of students.  Students will follow each other in class to see what we're reading.  This is a great integration of technology, reading, and writing in a real world, real time application.  Let me know your thoughts on your child having their own email address.

Dr. Seuss's birthday celebration:      Each year, I get guest speakers into my room for Dr. Seuss's Read Across America's celebration.  I think this was a favorite among the 8th graders!  If you know of anybody cool or interesting that you have a connection to, who would come in March 2 to read their favorite book, poem, article, etc. to our class please let me know by Friday, February 24th.  I think parents are cool and interesting, but please check with your child first if that would be okay with them if you came in to read.

Bend Update:     I'm going ahead with the planning of the field trip to Bend once I get district approval.  I'm working on the lodging now.  I have a coach bus reserved for May 8--10, however, we could save costs if we took a school bus.  Once I hear from the district, I'll keep you posted.  I'd like to have a couple parents on a committee to help make some reservations and do some minor tasks for me or people I can run ideas by.  If you'd like to help me out, please let me know.

Valentine's day:     We are having a mini-Valentine's day celebration in class tomorrow.  I asked students to write notes of gratitude and appreciation for their classmates.  We aren't having a party, but will take the time to pass out notes and eat a couple little treats.  Remember NO NUTS!  Happy Valentine's day!

Field Trip $$$:     If you haven't paid for the Oregon's children's theater, please pay the $7.75 by this Friday, so I can send in the payment.  Our March field trip to the Oregon Historical Society and Portland Art Museum in 3 weeks is going to cost $1 for Tri-Met.  We have a couple other field trips with the same costs for transporation, so if you'd like to send in $5 to cover all the trips, that would be wonderful.  I'll send home information about the overnight field trips and the costs in the next week or so.

I think that covers all general business for the week.  Enjoy the long weekend coming up.  :-)

Smile Always,

Liz

Hello Parents/Guardians,

The year is half over!  Can you believe that?  I feel like it just started.  Report cards will come home tomorrow in the reporting envelope.  Please sign and return these by Friday.  If you have any questions about regarding any of the marks, please don't hesitate to email or call me.

Science, science, science.  Only 5 more weeks (roughly) until the science fair.  We spent time today in class discussing the question that is due on Wednesday.  Students must think ahead a little and not just have a cool question in mind, but have a reasonable plan for how they will test the question.  I'm asking students to get parent approval as well, since some experiments are an inquiry into fire and what substances burn the biggest flame.  I've also asked them to think about what will be there independent (the variable you change during the experiment) and dependent variable (the variable you observe--changes in the dependent depend on the independent variable).  The background information and hypothesis is supposed to be due this Friday.  I'm changing that to next Tuesday so we have time this week in class to work on it.  I showed students a website today with ideas for science fair projects that break it down by subject of interest i.e. chemistry, food, sports, etc. called Science Buddies.  Students can partner with anybody they choose or work solo.  However, they will NOT be allowed to change partners or ideas after their question is approved.  Remember this project is for the students to do.  You can help with the experiment and give some advice and feedback.

Tomorrow and Wednesday we have the 5th grade science test.  4th graders will be in the lab with us working on something else.

Mrs. Caron is having a homework club on Wednesdays from 3--3:30 and she wanted me to let my parents know about it since we share some math students.  Please see or email her for any questions.

Don't forget about the Kiwanis Club meeting on Monday, February 13 at 3:15 in my room if your child is interested in participating this year.

4th graders group B have the field trip to Whitaker Pond this Wednesday from 12--3.  Please wear appropriate shoes and clothing to be outside.  If any parents want to chaperone, please let me know.  Speaking of which, I still need 1 more parent for the 4th grade overnight and 2 more parents for the 5th grade overnight.  Pretty please?

Happy Monday!  Congratulations to all the NY Giants fans.

Sincerely,

Liz Kobs

Hello Parents/Guardians,

Another week of fun in our blended family.  Happy Chinese New Year.  Yesterday in class we worked on Chinese calligraphy with brushes I brought back from China.  I also showed the students how to make ink with an ink stone and ink stick, an old practice not commonly used.  But very cool.  We practiced different characters and words along with our names.

Some of you may have noticed our giant colored published narrative pieces hanging in the hallway.  If not, please feel free to come in, despite the protests from your child, and read what they've written.  Many of you saw these at home.  I think it's very important for writing to be authentic and real, and publishing our work gives us a very real audience.  As a community of writers, when we're writing for real people and not just a teacher, we pay more attention to the conventions and other traits of our work.   As I say in the classroom, "autograph your work with excellence" because your representing yourself and your family name.

In the last email update, I mentioned our art auction project.  Today in class, Tracy Wolf Paquin came in to do a demonstration on the science of glass and we started on our fused glass project.  We are completing 2 projects, one for each grade level.  The 4th grade is going to work on a fused glass platter incorporating an abstract design of the city of Portland and the bulding scape of downtown.  I'm using the 5 themes of geography as our curriculum tie in and their previous knowledge of 3rd grade content to scaffold into this piece.  The 5th grade is working on a fused glass bowl representing our science with sun, moon, stars, solar system, milky way galaxy with touches of energy and matter in an abstract representation.  Each student will have a part of the design and creation of the overall class piece.  You won't want to miss bidding on either piece.  Tracy will come back in March or April and we'll do a 4x4 tile mural project that will be installed in the school.  Each child will get a 4x4 tile to be in charge of.  As a class we'll design that piece around a central concept such as relationships, conflict, power, systems, etc. and a signficant question tying in several subjects from the school year in an abstract design.  Students will also get to create their own small tile to take home.  I'm using my Run for the Arts to pay for Tracy's hours.  She is also donating several of her own hours and I'm contributing some "sweat equity" so to speak helping to prep and cut materials in her studio.  PTA is covering the materials for the installation and the auction is covering part of the auction project and we had a generous donation from a class family to cover after the auction limit.  Thank you!

Tomorrow in class we have a guest speaker, Dr. Reynolds Orchard, coming into talk to our class about tobacco use.  This is part of our health curriculum and a program called "Tar Wars"  from the Oregon Academy of Family Phsyicians Foundation on tobacco prevention.  I asked students to bring in any tobacco related ads from magazines if they saw them and to pay attention to advertising techniques while watching commercials this week.  The commercials don't have to be tobacco related.  This is part of media literacy.  How does the media target children?  How are the commercials different when your watching tv on different channels and different times?  What techniques are they using?

Last Friday was Passport Day and our class didn't get to participate.  This was due to a natural consequence of not managing our time or listening to directions and following expectations.  It was time to clean up and leave and many students were just standing around, so we waited.  Then we got our backpacks ready and waited for people to quietly line up.  As we proceeded down the hall like a pack of elephants, I waited again for voices to lower, so we came back to the room.  The expectation is we have a responsibility not to interrupt others rights to learn and it is the students responsibility to clean their area.  All this left us with only 5 minutes to get to Passport and this wasn't going to be enough time unless we cut into PE.  So I made the decision to miss Passport.  I really hated to enforce this, but I'm a firm believer in following through with expectations and students learning from natural consequences.  However, I also want to give them an opportunity to earn back Passport because I know many students study hard for this.  I have a couple parent volunteers who are willing to take their time and come in one day at lunch to quiz students.  I'll talk to the students about how to earn this back and what day at lunch the make up is.

Umpqua Bank presented their "Learn to Earn" program yesterday.  This is an optional participation program.  The first banking day is tomorrow, Thursday, January 26.

Kiwanis K-Kids is starting at Beverly Cleary.  This is a program for students in 4th or 5th grade to be a part of developing leadership skills, caring for our school and community through service learning, building character, and serving on a team to make a difference.  This program is in conjuction through the Key club at Grant.  The program will be run by high school leaders and advised by the Kiwanis club leaders and myself.  Students can earn community service hours.  The committment is meeting every other Monday (2nd & 4th of the month) for an hour.  Come find out more at an informational meeting on Monday, February 13 from 3:15--4 pm in room 220C.  You can also check out more at kiwaniskids.org.

I will be gone on Monday and Tuesday next week.  I'm the leader for the Chinese Cultural Exchange program at my previous school and our students from China arrive on Saturday for their host week in the United States and Portland.  My sub is Ms. Burny, our former PE teacher, and the students are familiar with her and in good hands.  She will dismiss those days, so please write notes regarding any dismissal changes.  Otherwise, she'll dismiss as normal.

Thanks for reading my lengthy email updates.  I appreciate the partnership.  These kids are amazing, sweet, and eager.  I love it!

Sincerely,

Liz Kobs

Hello Parents/Guardians,

Another update in the same week?  Yes, it's true.  There was some information I wanted to mention and neglected to in my last update.  First of all, thank you for the birthday wishes.

I'm sending home field trip permission slips and information for the upcoming day trips and the grade level overnighters.  These should be returned at your earliest convenience, no later than, January 31st.  The 4th grade have another field trip to Whitaker Pond scheduled for Feb 1 and Feb 8.  Same details as last time:  12--3 pm, they eat lunch here, be dressed for outdoors (coat & boots).  I could use 1-2 chaperones to escort our class and help Mr. Robertson, please let me know if interested.  I also still need 2 chaperones for the 5th grade overnight and 1 more for the 4th grade overnight.  I must have confirmation by next Wednesday, January 25th for the 5th grade overnight.  I could still use 2 more adults for the OHS/Portland Art Museum.  Also, please remember the $7.75 for the play is due by Friday, January 27th.  I still haven't heard from the majority of the class about the Bend field trip, but many are on board.  I'll wait another week to hear any feedback before making a decision.

Science fair is coming!  Science fair is coming!  Last week I sent home a sheet from the science department outling some due dates.  Please sign the sheet, showing you read through the dates.  Here is how our class will participate.  All 5th graders will partner up with a 4th grader.  This isn't required in 4th grade, but I think it is a good opportunity for 4th grade to "shadow" and help a 5th grade in preparation for next year.  All the work will be done at school for each step of the scientific method with the exception of the "Experiment".  This part will be completed at home.  Students will get to choose their topics and their partners.  More information available as I learn the project myself.

Next week is "NO Name Calling" Week.  I'll do a couple activities in class around it but I really want students to practice it, not only at school, but at home.

Just a selling point for attending this year's Beverly Benefit on March 9 at the Melody Ballroom.  Our class will have 2 fused glass projects in the auction that you won't want to miss bidding on.  More information next week.  There is a teacher activity that many of the girls in class will have an interest in.  Sorry boys.  :-)  A Slumber Party with Ms. Kobs.  I'll come to your house and host a slumber party.  I'll bring everything needed for a fun evening:  movies, music, make-up, nails, games, facial masks, treats, snacks, tons of energy to entertain and my sleeping bag!!!

Have a wonderful weekend.

Liz Kobs

January 17, 2012

Hello Parents,

Make sure your children do the snow dance this evening and we get a snow day tomorrow.  That would be the best birthday gift ever!

Content wise, we are doing similar activities and lessons this week as last.  We're working on another narrative this week.  The narrative from last week is due this Friday and students are writing it out on BIG colored butcher paper to post around the school.  Hopefully, you saw it this weekend.  :-)  I put up our published narrative "All About Me" poems in the upstairs display case.  Lit circles start this Thursday.  If you'd like to help faciliate a group, I could still use one more leader.  No reading log or spelling this week.

I found out the cost of the Bend field trip transportation costs.  Right now it looks like $80 per student for the bus, plus another estimated $35 for museum admissions and an estimated $40 for food costs.  This doesn't include any fees associated with lodging or covering the chaperones.  So I'm estimating the cost of the field trip will be about $175 per student.  I think this is a lot of money, especially since both grade levels have a $100 overnight fee along with the other $20-25 in various field trips costs this year.  I'd like to know what people think before I proceed or cancel with plans.

Remember tomorrow is late opening.   I hope you had a nice 3 day weekend.

Sincerely,

Liz

January 10, 2012

Hello Parents/Guardians,

This week in class we're starting our lit circle groups.  I gave book talks today about a variety of books and students gave their order of choices.  They'll find out their book groups on Thursday, get their job packets, and plan their jobs for the next 5 weeks.  I could still use 1-2 parents to help on Thursdays from 11:30 to 12 for lit circles.  Our first meeting with parents is next Thursday, January 17.  My plan is to give students one day a week to meet before their meeting to read together or work on their job and any other preparation is homework to complete before the Thursday meeting.  We also started a class book called "The Black Pearl" by Scott O'Dell.  Reading log reflection is on the website along with this week's homophone spelling words.

In writing we're working on personal narratives and creating vivid images.  I'm using the picture book, "Secret Place" by Eve Bunting.  Using our graphic organizer, the focus is on prepositions, verbs, and adjectives.  We also used the prewriting technique of drawing.  We'll draft a piece, edit, and produce a final copy by Friday.  We started our vocabulary building program, Wordly Wise today.  Lesson 1 is due by Friday.

We have a special presentation by Metro this week on packaging.  This is part of environmental science.  The focus this week in science is on introductory assessment, what we already know, safety, vocabulary, group expectations, and our science notebooks.  4th grade is circuits and pathways and 5th grade is the solar system.  My goal is to get to social studies next week.  I'll flip flop weeks with the currculum and some days integrate those two subjects into the reading and writing time for the week.

Thank you to people who volunteered for the upcoming field trips.  I still have some openings left.  I need to have some more male chaperones for the overnight field trips if possible (4th, 5th, & Bend).  I have 1 spot for the play and 2 spots for the historical society.  As far as the Bend field trip goes, I'm waiting to hear about cost of the bus and I'll roughly estimate museum/activity and food costs and give a ballpark figure of the total cost of the field trip before making any reservations or firm plans.  With both grade levels having $100 overnight field trips along with the other $15 for the other field trips, I don't want to put families out with another large expense.  I'll keep you posted.

Have a wonderful week.

Sincerely,

Liz

January 5, 2012

Welcome back and welcome to another year started.  I hope your winter break was restful.  It's always a transition to get back into the swing of the schedule....waking up early, going to bed early, activities, homework, and family time.  This seems like a long week.  But I'm glad to be back and excited to see the kids again, hear their stories, laughter, and see their learning.

Lots of learning going on in room 220C this week.  In reading, I'm using some Scott Foresman stories to teach the students literature circle roles.  We'll start literature circles in the next couple weeks along with our continued SF program and a class novel.  I would like to have 5-6 parent voluneers help facilitate the book groups.  Here's the committment of time:  Thursdays for 30 minutes for roughly 4-5 weeks.  I'm a little flexible on the timing of the group:  11-11:30 or 11:30-12.  However, I'd need all the groups to meet at the same time if possible.  If you're interested, please email me.  Next week, I'm starting Wordly Wise and continuing until the end of the year.  This is a vocabulary building program.  Each grade level has their own book.  I'll give students one day a week (Tuesdays) to work on the lesson as our morning warm up and the activities for the lesson are due by Friday, to cover IN class.  Whatever isn't finished for morning warm up will be homework.  I'd like this to be more meaningful, so I'm developing and creating other ways to integrate the vocabulary into the currciulum or other activities to do with it.

In writing we're focusing on narrative writing and started the unit with poems...."All About Me".  This isn't the typical list of favorites and hobbies, but more personal with what we imagine, know, wonder, and believe.  The rough draft was due today and the final typed copy is due on Monday.  Speaking of typed, our blues poem are due tomorrow.  We wrote these before winter break and I handed them back to students on Tuesday with comments and corrections.  I'm hoping the main hall bulletin board is free, otherwise we'll post these in the upstairs showcase.  Be on the look out!  Also, we published our Seedfolks book and each child got their own copy.  A must read for sure!  :-)

Here are some reminders:

  • 5th grade community service of 5 hours is due by February 2nd
  • Oregon Children's field trip $$ is due by January 27th  $7.75

Upcoming science is circuits and pathways for 4th grade and food web/chains or solar system for 5th.  Math testing is all next week.  No reading log or spelling this week.  We're easing back into the swing of this week.

 Happy Friday.

Sincerely,

Liz

December 13, 2011

Dear Parents/Guardians,

I can't believe winter break is around the corner.  Time flies by fast when your learning and having fun!  I'm really enjoying these cold, sunny, no rain December days we're having.  Remember we have late opening tomorrow.

Our deadline for our adopt a family is this Thursday.  Please refer to the last email or webpage about what the 4 and 6 year old girls need/want for the holidays.  Of course, I'll take donations and gifts on Friday as well.

Today we dropped our egg experiment for our scientific inquiry lab and practice write up.  All the eggs made it in one piece except one.  Not that I root for failure, but part of science is trial and error and experiments going wrong.  There's lots of growth in something not working out right.  Cause and effect.  Independent and dependent variables.  This was a great lab to kick off the scientific method.  By the end of the year, students will be proficient in the write up without any prompts.

Last week I forgot to write about a couple activities we did with reading.  We read about Norman Rockwell.  I made a powerpoint to give them some background information on the artist and showed them his famous 4 freedoms.  We listened and watched the YouTube video of FDR giving his state of the union speech that referenced the 4 freedoms that inspired Rockwell.  I also tied in referencing Pearl Harbor since last week was the anniversary.  Then I put the students into 4 groups and we did an arts based strategy called tableau.  Each group got a different freedom to act out.  They had to put lines to the people in the art and relate it to what was going on at the time.  They did a fabulous job!  The lines they spoke showed they understood The Great Depression, the attack on Pearl Harbor, and what people were feeling at the time.  In reading this week, we're focusing on the blues and music.  The question this week is "How does an artist use music to inspire others?"  The students are doing a station rotation with some information about the blues (artist, origination, history).  I will show some videos on different blues artists, songs, styles, and a clip from Adventures in Babysitting where the characters are asked to sing the blues.  Students will write a blues poem about a topic of their choice and volunteers will perform these in class.

5th graders are working on their 7 habits and habit 1 is being proactive, not reactive.  This step focusing on the circle of control and what each individual can control.....themselves.  It introduces the idea of a personal bank account (PBA) and making deposits for positive self behavior/thoughts/attitudes and withdrawals for negative attitudes.  I've asked 5th graders to keep a P.B.A. over winter break and write down their deposits and withdrawals.  Feel free to reinforce this at home.  Are they kind to their siblings?  Do they backtack when asked to do something?  Are they helpful?  Take care of their responsibilities such as chores, homework, etc.  Please be sure to point out more positive than negative.  :-)

Friday is our class spirit day.  Students can wear school appropriate (dress code) pajamas and/or holiday hats/antlers to class.  I wish everyone a wonderful winter break, holiday, and Happy New Year.  Thank you for your wonderful children.

Sincerely,

Liz Kobs

December 6, 2011

Hello Parents/Guardians,

What a cold, gorgeous week ahead!  The sun shining through our windows makes the week go by much faster.  We have a full week of activities planned in all subjects.  OAKS testing went very well and every student met or exceeded grade level reading scores!  Incredible!  Give your kids a big pat on the back for a job done well, they should be very proud of their effort.

Speaking of reading, this week in SF (Scott Foresman) we're looking at main ideas and summarizing.  The weekly question is "How do artists inspire the future?"  The main story is about Leonardo DaVinci.  I created a powerpoint to go with our story about his life and his major works of art.   Spelling this week is compound words.  Since most of the words are easy, we'll have our quiz on Friday this week with NO vocab stories or vocabulary strips.  The reading log weekly reflection is about main ideas.

In science, we're doing an egg drop experiment as a whole class using the scientific method.  We're going through each step as a class, but students are coming up with their own inquiry question, hypothesis, procedures/experiments, and results.  They'll learn how to do a science inquiry write up.  I anticipate the actual egg drop will happen next week.  None of this will need to be done at home and students are working in pairs.

Mrs. Thomas, our school counselor is coming in once a week to read "Crash" by Jerry Spinelli to the whole class.  This is a really good book on bullying.  Not only is this a good guidance book, but another opportunity to integrate and scaffold reading skills like making predictions, character sketch, main ideas and summarizing.

Our class heard about an opportunity on Friday to adopt a family/children from Boise-Elliot school.  The class voted to take on this opportunity and pay it forward.  I feel like these are important lessons for students to learn during this time of year....to give to those less fortunate than us.  Here is the information I've received so far:  a pair of sisters in need. One is 6 yrs old, wears size 8/9 in pants and shirts, wears a size 2 kids shoes, she likes babies, art, and play make-up, her sister is 4 yrs old. She wears a size 5/6 in both pants and shirts, wears a size 11 in kids, and likes the same toys as her sister. Gifts can be wrapped, with gender and age written on the outside.  If you would like to participate, please bring any donations to school by next Thursday, December 15.

Yesterday I sent home a letter with your child regarding the Beverly Benefit Auction.  Mark your calendar, March 9th is the date to save.  Our class will have a basket and an art project you can bid on.  Not to mention, an opportunity to bid on an activity with Ms. Kobs.  More information later.

I'm sending home midterms this week to let you know the progress of your child.  I've only highlighted 3-4 strengths.  Of course, I could highlight all of them!  I also highlighted 1-2 areas to work on.  Please sign and return these by Friday.

I've received the dates of our grade level overnight field trips and costs.  The 4th grade Oregon Trail overnight will be May 31--June 1 and costs $93.  I'm not sure how many chaperones I'll need for this yet or when payment is due.  The 5th grade Camp Kiwanalong overnight will be April 3--4 and costs $119.  I'll need 3 chaperones for the 5th grade overnight.  If your interested, please let me know before Winter Break.  I have to put parent names on the authorization forms for the district.  We have other field trips planned as well in the spring that include:  Oregon Children's Theater "The Storm in the Barn" play on May 4th.  Cost: $7.75.  Payment must be received by January 27.  I'll need 5 chaperones.  Timbers U-23 game and Health day on May 24.  Cost: $6.  I'll need 5 chaperones.  I'm also planning a field trip to Oregon Historical Society and the Zoo.

That's about all for this week.  As usual, if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.  Have a wonderful week.

Sincerely,

Liz
