On-line Resources
These are websites that may be useful for you and your students:
Math
MathLearning Center www.mathlearningcenter.org
As you may know, the district adopted a new math curriculm, "Bridges." The curriculum website has many resources for families, inlcuding home math activites, information to families about the curriculum and it's philosophy. Go to www.mathlearningcenter.org. At the very bottom of the page there is a small link that says, "Support for Families," http://www.mathlearningcenter.org/resources/materials/parents/parents1. This will take you to an information page. Then, on the left you can click on first grade to find more grade specific information. As this is my first year teaching this curriculum I would love to hear your feedback about the usefulness of this cite.
Reading
Over the summer I took a class about supporting boys in literacy. Out of this I found several websites that I thought may be useful for familes as well. While most are targeted at boys, some certainly may be useful for girls as well. Let me know what you think!
- Guys Read, www.guysread.com
- This site had really well done book lists by topic!
- Boys Read, www.boysread.org
- This has great parent tips for reading!
- American Library Association, http://www.ala.org/
- This site is full of great links.
- Read Kiddo Read, www.readkiddoread.com
- This is an awesome website! I love the layout!
- The books are leveled initially so it would be easy to find the right difficultly of book.
- I also love how each book has a parent rating as well as an educator rating.
- Getting Boys to Read, http://www.gettingboystoread.com/
- This is an interesting site with a wide variety of information about boys and reading.
- I like that it has book suggestions along with strategies to use to help boys read (like incorporating movement).
- The Best Childrens Books, http://www.the-best-childrens-books.org/
- This site was suggested by another parent as a good resource for finding books.
- It was created by teachers.
