Hello students and families. Welcome back from a much needed winter break. Hopefully everyone is rested as we are embarking on more exciting experiments and mathmatical challenges. We are finishing a round of experiments working with organisms in a compost ecosystem. The kids did two experiments designed by me and then posed their own scientic question and designed their own inquiry. Believe me, they came up with some interesting questions. We are visiting the scientific inquiry process because we are preparing for our upcoming annual Beverly Cleary Science Fair. The actual Science Fair will occur on March 21st. The students should be bringing home a timeline of dates for each step of the inquiry process. The due dates are 2/2 (Scientific question), 2/10 hypothesis and background information), 2/17 (procedures and materials), 3/2 (data due), 3/9 (analysis and conclusions). We will assemble the boards at school the week prior to the science fair and all boards will be due on Friday, March 16th. The students will be required to attend the science fair for a minimum of 45 minutes between 6:00 and 7:30. We are looking forward to another year of outstanding projects!!
We are fortunate to have Trevor Greer serving as a student teacher in Math. Trevor attends Concordia University, where he is working on his Master's degree in teaching. He is doing a splendid job of teaching the students how to multiply and divide fractions. As always, you can expect the kids to have homework every night excluding Friday. We have completed our first round of OAKS testing in Math and we have a great deal of material to cover prior to our next round. We will be retesting in March. If after the 2nd round of testing, students are not yet meeting or exceeding, they will be given a 3rd opportunity.
