Hello! My name is Brandan McClain, and I teach 8th Grade Core. I’ve taught English and Social Studies at Beaumont since 2003. I love my job: getting to work with creative, interesting kids who will grow up to make the world a better place.
I grew up on a farm in Kansas and went to a small college in Iowa called Grinnell. I majored in theater there and moved to Portland in 1996 to perform improvised comedy with some college friends. I fell in love with Portland and figured out how to make it my permanent home. I live in Northeast Portland with my wife, Kate, our daughter, Willa, and a large, fluffy black dog named Rufus.
I love riding my bike, hiking and canoeing. I still do some acting and improv in my spare time, but I spend most of my time trying to figure out how to keep my classroom a fun, engaging, comfortable place for my students. Improv, film making, song writing, blogging, and web design are among the tools we use in my class to study U.S. History and develop our reading, writing and thinking skills.
For each of the last two years, students in my classes have published books of their own writing and sold them to the public to raise money for a charity. We’ve been able to donate over $100 each to Doctors Without Borders and the Oregon Food Bank.
