Talented and Gifted Nominations

TAG 101 Meeting for families of newly-identified TAG students.
TAG 101 at Marshall High School is on Wednesday, May 8, 2013 from 7-8:30 PM.
Parents with district staff will discuss what services to expect in the classroom, and discuss rights and responsibilities. TAG 101 will be more hands-on than in past years, with opportunities to try out examples of TAG lesson strategies.

Two opportunities for TAG students for this summer.  The summer enrichment program at U of O has offerings for campers  entering 6th-10th grade and Jr. Counselors entering 11th and 12th grades.

Teachers work with all TAG students in a regular classroom setting, providing assignments and content at their ‘rate’ and ‘level’ of learning.  As most schools in Portland Public, Beach uses a school wide TAG plan for all identified TAG students.  If parents would like an individualized plan for their student they may request this from the homeroom teacher.  For exceptionally gifted individuals, there is a focus option school called Access to which families can apply.

We have information at school regarding TAG, including the school wide TAG plan.   The TAG nomination process begins each year in October.  Forms are available then on the TAG bulletin board which is located across from the office.

This web site of the Oregon Department of Education allows you to search the standards by subject and grade level.

Saturday Academy provides summer challenge camps geared to TAG students.  See their web site for more information .

Time line for TAG nominations for the 2012-2013 school year:
  • End of November-Nominations due
  • Winter 2012-2013-Testing
  • By March families will be notified whether their child is TAG or not.
If you have questions, please contact Brenda Mahaney, Beach TAG Coordinator, at bmahaney@pps.net or 503.916.6236

Talented and Gifted

Portland Public Schools is dedicated to identifying and providing for the unique academic and social emotional needs of Talented and Gifted students across the district. Our goal is to provide educational opportunities to students of all racial, ethnic, and socio-economic groups, to provide informational training to educators, and to provide consistent challenge for all students.

Welcome to the Portland Public Schools' Talented and Gifted Website.

In compliance with the Oregon TAG Mandate for gifted education, Portland Public Schools focuses its services on meeting the student's instructional level and rate of learning every day in the classroom across the curriculum. Classroom teachers assess a student's level and rate in all subject areas and modify the instruction to provide appropriate content challenge and instructional pacing.

To facilitate this approach, the principal is responsible to oversee the identification process, arrange staff development and parent meetings, and act as an on-site resource for gifted education in the school. From the District Office, TAG TOSA's (Teachers On Special Assignment) and Achievement Coordinators assist in identification procedures, alternative program options, staff development, parent meetings, and instructional planning to meet students' needs.
