At Abernethy, students receive excellent academic instruction from a collaborative teaching staff and a well-rounded curriculum. Abernethy has received the highest rating from the State of Oregon.

Abernethy’s special focus brings art into the school with residencies, performances and a variety of experiences. The elementary music program is supplemented with band for 4th and 5th grade students and strings for 3, 4 and 5th graders. In addition, physical education is provided to all students with an emphasis on lifelong wellness.

“The Garden of Wonders,” based at Abernethy, is known for its successful, holistic approach to garden, food and ecological site-based learning. Through five years of careful integration of benchmark-targeted, teacher-approved interactive curriculum, children gain a deep understanding of the interconnectedness between nutrition, food, health and the environment. The Garden of Wonders works closely with our school chef, Nicole Hoffman. As new recipes are developed in the demonstration kitchen, students have an opportunity to sample them. Meals are prepared daily in our kitchen with fresh local produce.

Abernethy has been a “Safe Routes School” for the past five years. Through our partnership with the Portland City of Transportation, we have developed the safest routes to bike and walk to school to keep our families moving though rain or shine.

Abernethy enjoys strong support from parents and the local community. In addition to an extremely active and committed PTA and Foundation, the school is also fortunate to have many parents who volunteer in the classrooms and at school-wide activities. Community support has strengthened over the past few years as Abernethy has worked to create solid working relations with its local neighborhood association, The Hosford Abernethy Neighborhood District, as well as other local neighborhood organizations.
