ABERNETHY FOOD DRIVE

40th ANNIVERSARY OF PROJECT SECOND WIND

Student Council News

Over the course of FORTY years, Project Second Wind has collected approximately 6,800,000 pounds of food.  That translates into 136,000 emergency food boxes.  Founded by high school students in 1971 who recognized a serious need for a “second wind” of hunger relief after the holidays, their goal was simple and compelling: to feed hungry children.  Children account for 33% of those who rely on emergency food from  The Oregon Food Bank Network.

The shelves at The Oregon Food Bank are at an all time low and the demand for emergency food has never been greater.  Your family can help by bringing in nonperishable foods or donated money ( each dollar = 5 pounds of food ). The drive will be held during the week of February 28th through March 4th.

The student council, along with Mr. Goodrich, will be promoting Project Second Wind Food Drive next week.

Oregon Food Bank needs these nutritious foods:

  • Canned meats ( i.e., tuna, chicken, salmon)
  • Canned and boxed meals ( i.e., soup, chili, stew, macaroni and cheese)
  • Peanut butter and other nut butters
  • Canned or dried beans and peas ( i.e., black, pinto, lentils)
  • Pasta, rice, cereal
  • Canned fruits and vegetables
  • 100 percent fruit or vegetable juice ( canned, plastic or boxed)
  • Cooking oil
  • Shelf-stable mild
  • Consider donating healthy, low-fat and low-sugar products

Recognition will be given to individual schools collecting the most based on per capita giving and total pounds collected.  Within the school, the first-place class will have an extra hour of PE with Mr. Goodrich !  The second place class will have an extra half hour of PE with Mr. Goodrich !

This is a great community service and one in which Abernethy has been proud to participate.

Also, if you’d like to volunteer at the food Bank, please contact Tom Goodrich ( 503) 916-6190 or Mary Ellen Glynn (503)239-8729.
