The auction is upon us! I hope to see a lot of you there, it is a very fun event.
We have been studying about our heritage. It was fun to post and compare all of the different countries that we are related to. THis was a precursor to discussing KIVA. For more information, check out www.KIVA.org. Our first grade class was given $100 to use as a micro loan for people who need it. We successfully donated our first $25 to a man named Carlos from Ecuador. The class had three requirements; had to have kids, grow things and want to fix their house. Carlos fit all of those requirements. They were very excited to hear that his loan had been fulfilled and are looking forward to our next donation.
The first week of April, we will donate to another person. I will let you know what they decide this time.
We read a book called One Hen which prompted some great discussions. It was a true story about a boy from an African Village who got a loan and used it to buy one chicken. Slowly the sales of the eggs paid for his education (grade school through college). He became a very successful farmer in his adult life and was able to pay it forward by helping some of his workers get their education.
The next book, Beatrice's Goat comes along with lessons that will be sent home. We will start that next week also. More about this wonderful curriculum later.
Happy April Fools Day!
