About:
Woodmere provides a high-quality school environment for its entire student population. Staff at Woodmere work cooperatively to plan and coordinate the instructional program. Woodmere reflects a balanced approach to literacy, providing 90 minutes of literacy instruction and requiring students of all grade levels to read at home every day. Math instruction is provided for 60 minutes daily. Title 1 staff, special educators and ESL (English as a Second Language) staff support students in reading, writing and math. Instruction and curriculum development supports all students in learning to read, write, speak and listen. Student achievement in literacy and math is monitored regularly and achievement gains are reported annually.
Pre School: We currently have an MECP (Multnomah Early Childhood Program) on site.
Kindergarten: Woodmere currently has 8 full day K/1 classrooms.
Kindergarten Round-up: Our kindergarten round-up will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 9, 2010
Childcare: There is no childcare on site. The SUN program supports student after school.
Before and after school programs
- Woodmere is a SUN School (Schools Uniting Neighborhoods), building families and community into a collaborative program in a school-community center. SUN supports an extensive before and after school program at Woodmere daily. Homework assistance, enrichment classes, the arts and recreation are offered to students in grades 1-5 until 5:15 p.m. Homework assistance is provided every morning.The before and after school program is enjoyed by over 200 students in over 55 classes weekly.SUN also encourages and supports parent involvement at Woodmere Elementary. SUN provides opportunities for parents of many languages to participate in the organization and planning for the school, as well as family events that celebrate our diverse community.
Community partnerships
- Woodmere is supported through many partnerships with community businesses and agencies. Portland Impact partnership supports our SUN program and Extended Day. Woodmere also enjoys parnterships with Reed College, Portland State University, SMART business and community volunteers and Portland Community College. The Regional Arts and Cultural Council and Multnomah County Library assist in providing enrichment activities for students in Extended Day programs. Local businesses provide support for school events and activities.
Student learning environment
- The learning environment at Woodmere reflects a developmental program that supports the learning style and performance of each child. The educational program focuses on the intellectual, social, emotional and physical needs of each child.
- Woodmere School is a Community of Learners who care for each other. Together we accept the responsibility to challenge and empower all students to be the best they can be by building academic skills and self-esteem.
- Woodmere offers students from a diverse cultural, linguistic and experiential background, an opportunity to learn in a mixed age, multi-cultural and cooperative setting, focusing on the educational goals to prepare for the future.
Curriculum components
- Woodmere Elementary School builds its instructional foundations on a child-centered philosophy of effective practices in teaching literacy. Throughout the school day, the comprehensive curriculum supports students in the reading and writing process. Key teaching approaches involving guided and shared reading and writing, responding to text, displaying work and integrating knowledge are demonstrated at each developmental level. Woodmere\'s instruction is aligned with the district curriculm.
- Mathematics is taught throughout the school using strategies of Balanced Approach to Math (BAM), including Everyday Counts. Students explore the conceptual framework of mathematics, developing sound reasoning skills. They work from very concrete demonstrations to the more abstract framework of math. A consistent language of math is used at each grade level, reinforcing concepts as students develop greater facilities of thinking and reasoning mathematically.
- Woodmere provides a rich experience in learning for all students, building on the strengths of its diverse population. Students are supported throughout the day in \"being the best they can be\". An enriched curriculum, an engaged student population and a teaching staff with high expectations supports a school community built on respect and care for one another.
Staff
- Woodmere is staffed to support approximately 400 kindergarten through fifth grade students. Classroom teachers, ESL teachers, special instruction teachers, Title 1/literacy teachers, educational assistants, library, music and physical education provide students with the needed academic support.
- Staff development includes work with all academic areas with a specific focus on writing this year. Team planning for curriculum and instruction for all children provides the foundation for teaching and learning at Woodmere.
Parent and family support
- Family involvement and parent support are a large component of Woodmere Elementary School. Throughout the school, families are engaged in supporting their child\'s education through parenting activities, communication, volunteering, learning at home, decision making and collaboration with the community.
- Decision Making: Families support Woodmere through PTA and the Site Council. Parent input and guidance is sought and promoted in decisions involving curriculum, planning and support activities. Parent voices are heard in several languages through target parent groups (e.g., Latino Parent Group, Russian Parent Group).
- Volunteering: Parents are welcome partners in their child\'s education at Woodmere. Parents are encouraged to volunteer in classrooms and support events through the PTA and school activities.
- Parenting Support: Woodmere is in partnership with Touchstone, providing services to support families in achieving their goals by identifying and using their strengths.
- Collaborating with the Community: Woodmere has a strong partnership with parents, agencies and businesses in the community. Efforts to work together support achievement, social and emotional development and family well-being.
Special programs and features
- Extended day program before and after School is a joint effort between Multnomah County and the City of PortlandSchools Uniting Neighborhoods (SUN) Project. Woodmere is a SUN school, building families and community into a collaborative program in a school-community setting.
- Woodmere has a large community of children coming from families whose home language is not English and whose cultural background is varied. Staff support the diversity of background and encourage participation of all families at school.
- SMART (Start Making a Reader Today) project provides business and community volunteers who read with primary students twice a week. The reading program enhances individual support and encouragement to young readers.
- Student Leadership Program, coordinated by a Woodmere and SUN staff members, provides student support, opportunities for students to get involved in community service and assisting others at school. Activities include Play Leader Program, safety patrol, Student Advisory, cafeteria assistance, recycling, tutoring, library and classroom assistance.
