Woodlawn School, in partnership with our community, is dedicated to providing a learning atmosphere where students can develop the qualities needed to become successful, responsible and productive citizens. We believe our school should be a safe place for children and adults. Woodlawn has high academic and behavioral expectations for students. We proudly celebrate and respect the diversity of our school and community. We work cooperatively to ensure students and adults are treated safely, respectfully and responsibly. Maintaining an atmosphere for learning at Woodlawn School is accomplished through combined efforts of our students, staff and parents.
Before and after school programs
- Homework Clubs, Music Clubs, Boys of Distinction,Self Enhancement, Inc. (SEI), YMCA Daycare, Kúkátónón African Dance Troupe, Young Artists and the Woodlawn Garden.
Community partnerships
- Experience Corps, Touchstone, Self Enhancement, Inc., Foster Grandparents, Community Gardens, Jr. Achievement, YMCA, SMART, Stand for Children and Chess for Success.
Student learning environment
- Woodlawn is an Early Childhood Education Center with full-day pre-kindergarten and full-day kindergarten.
- Woodlawn is a school-wide Title One school, providing resources to support academic achievement.
- English as a Second Language, Special Education and TAG (Talented and Gifted) program staff collaborate with classroom teachers to provide coordinated services to children.
- Schoolwide rules are taught and reinforced to promote a safe, orderly learning environment.
- Diversity of culture and language is celebrated and used as a source of enriched curriculum at Woodlawn School.
- Instructional blocks focus intensive learning time on building academic skills.
- Specialists provide supplemental instruction and support to students.
- Volunteer tutors assist individual students in reading and mathematics.
- School assemblies, field trips and other activities are tied to instructional goals to enhance student learning.
- Varied classroom configurations and team-teaching provide for multiple learning options.
- A well-rounded library collection promotes library and research skills, as well as enjoyment of reading.
Curriculum components
- Schoolwide focus on excellence in literacy, integrated across the curriculum areas.
- A yearlong curriculum plan guides instruction and coordinates learning for students as they progress from grade to grade.
- A schoolwide assessment program provides information to staff and parents about student progress to adjust curriculum and instruction to meet each student’s needs.
- The mathematics curriculum emphasizes hands-on experiences, computation and problem solving, building student understanding of mathematical concepts from concrete to abstract levels.
- Curriculum content, instruction and activities are selected to emphasize and extend students’ knowledge of varied cultures, including their own.
- Second Steps curriculum provides weekly instruction in social skills important to personal success.
- The computer lab provides for using the tools of technology to extend and enhance learning.
Staff
- Woodlawn School has 23 classroom teachers, 12 special instruction teachers and 6 educational assistants.
- The Woodlawn Staff participates in professional development through Reading First, Reading Interventions, Ruby Payne, Writing and Math Investigations.
- Grade level and leadership teams promote communication, consistency and collaboration.
Parent and family support
- Three Family Nights share ideas for helping students at home in Reading, Writing and Mathematics.
- Displays and performances such as Special Friends Day, Science Fair, Winter Program, Martin Luther King Day and the Fine Arts Fair are times to share and celebrate student achievements with families and the community.
- The Touchstone Specialist offers a variety of support to students and their families, using the family unity model.
- Monthly Local School Advisory Meetings are coupled with Parent Organization meetings, providing opportunities for sharing information and organizing support efforts for school projects.
- Parents are active on the Woodlawn Site Council, the guiding force in Woodlawn school improvement planning.
Special programs and features
- The Kúkátónón African Dance Troupe, a non-profit entity, performs West African traditional dance accompanied by professional drummers. The Troupe, composed of 2nd–5th grade Woodlawn students, is selected by audition and performs throughout the greater Portland metropolitan area.
- Mentoring and tutoring programs such as Boys of Distinction, Girls’ Club, SEI, SMART, Experience Corps and Foster Grandparents make available many adults to support student learning.
- The onsite Woodlawn Classroom Garden is a source of rich learning in the areas of science, nutrition and community service.
