- To maintain low class sizes, especially in the primary grades, much of our staff allocation is focused on the classroom.
Curriculum components
- Whitman\'s schoolwide Title I program focuses on student achievement with emphasis on increased performance in reading, writing and math. A schoolwide schedule supports 120-minute reading blocks with explicit small group reading instruction, flexible groupings and continuous monitoring of students\' progress.
- Students benefit from 60-minute grade level blocks of math and writing. Students develop mathematical thinking and problem-solving skills using Investigations and Everyday Counts math curriculum. Students also benefit from a daily 60-minute Writer\'s workshop with an emphasis on grade level assignments.
- Special Education students and English Language Learners are served in an inclusive model in the classrooms. Students needing additional support receive help in small groups outside the classroom.
- Students also benefit from a part-time music, physical education and Talented and Gifted (TAG) program.
- Computers throughout the building and a computer lab allow for instructional technology to support students\' learning.
