About:
Rigler is a neighborhood school where high achievement, a positive climate and community involvement are the top priorities. Rigler staff are highly trained and offer hands-on, excellent instruction to all students with a focus in literacy, math and science. Rigler is a school wide Title I school. Rigler students have access to teacher specialists and a variety of enrichment activities. Families are always welcome at Rigler. There are opportunities for involvement in Site Council, SUN school and the PTA. Rigler is proud to offer a two-way Spanish Immersion program. At this time we have immersion classes in K-2nd grade and we will add a new class every year. Rigler is one of Portland Public Schools' future K-8th grade buildings. We currently have kindergarten to 7th grade, and we will add 8th grade next year, in 2008-2009.
Childcare: SUN offers after school care daily.
Before and after school programs
- Rigler is a SUN Site School. We have classes for students after school and daily aftercare for students in the full-time program. Rigler also has a class of \"Dreamers,\" and the third graders in the \"I Have a Dream\" program receive after school enrichment activities and tutoring.
- Rigler offers a free breakfast program.
Community partnerships
- Portland Impact, Reading is Fundamental (RIF), Grant-Madison Caring Community, Cully Neighborhood Association, Multnomah County Book To You Program, I Have a Dream, Touchstone and Schools Uniting Neighborhoods (SUN).
Student learning environment
- Students benefit from specialized and differentiated
instruction in every classroom. With Title I funding we
are able to enrich academic experiences and provide
additional teaching staff to help address each student's
needs. - Specialized instruction is provided to eligible students
in English Language Development through the ESL
department. Students with IEP's are served in the
Resource Center and in their classrooms by Special
Education staff. Special services are delivered using
both push-in and pull-out models. - Rigler students can participate in a variety of afterschool enrichment classes through the SUN program. Classes include athletics, art and homework support. SUN also involves families in school life and activities.
- Young Audiences programs featuring the arts are provided to Rigler students. Students also participate in additional programming around the arts and music at school. This year we have a choral and instrumental music program. Teachers plan a variety of hands-on learning experiences, including field trips to give more meaning to classroom instruction.
- Rigler families may participate in a variety of evening events at school including the Multicultural Arts and Food event, Family Literacy and Math nights and Title I family nights.
Curriculum components
- Rigler offers a two-way Spanish Immersion program for our neighborhood students. Every year this program will add a grade. Eventually we will have Spanish immersion K-8th grade.
- Young Audiences, Run for the Arts, Rigler Community Garden, Special Education, English as a Second Language, Talented and Gifted (TAG) program.
- We participate in the Oregon Reading First grant in grades K-3. In grades 4th-7th, we have newly adopted materials and curricula in language arts.
- Reading is Fundamental (RIF).
Staff
- 25 classroom teachers, 17 specialists, 13 educational assistants, 2 secretaries, 5 cafeteria, 3 custodial.
- Rigler has one of the largest attendance areas in the school district. Title I funding is used to enrich educational opportunities, provide specialized instruction, and instructional coaching and support student behavior and development.
Parent and family support
- Cully Neighborhood Association and Back to School Fair.
- Monthly newsletters inform families about school events.
- Family involvement is encouraged through, PTA, Site Council, Title 1, ESL, Sun School, Art and Literacy nights.
- Family curriculum nights (math, reading, etc.).
Special programs and features
- STARBASE: science program, grade 5; Outdoor School, grade 6; Reading First, grades K-3rd, I Have a Dream, grade 3.
- Strong ESL program serves twelve nationalities, provides projects celebrating cultural diversity. Approximately 55% of our student population qualifies for ESL services.
- Eligible Rigler students receive services from Special Education in the Resource Room and speech/language services. Pull-out/Push-in instruction strategies are used for Title I, ESL and Special Education students. All students receive instruction that is differentiated and specially designed to address individual academic needs.
- Rigler School has been designated as a SUN School (Schools Uniting Neighborhoods). SUN Schools are designed to help kids succeed academically and socially, increase parent involvement in schools and expand the use of our public school buildings. SUN schools' goals also include pooling resources to provide a more comprehensive delivery of education, recreation, social and health services to the community. SUN Schools are a joint effort of Rigler staff, Portland Impact and Multnomah County.
