At Llewellyn, children are challenged to learn and grow in an environment where parents, local college students and community members collaborate with teachers to ensure every student’s academic success. Nestled on a ridge above Oaks Bottom and the Willamette River, Llewellyn is a neighborhood school that has been serving the community of Sellwood-Moreland and southeast Portland for 80 years. Llewellyn is centrally located with easy access to learning opportunities outside the classroom. Teachers walk classes to nearby parks, conduct science workshops in Oaks Bottom and Johnson Creek and tour local businesses. Science is integrated throughout the curriculum, from studying rocks and mealworms in first grade to using Oaks Bottom as a living lab in fourth grade. Students also receive computer instruction in keyboarding and program application from a computer instructor. Teachers have access to a mobile computer lab. Llewellyn’s schoolwide reading program provides every child with quality small-group reading instruction for 70 minutes, four days a week. The program taught by local artists includes: (1) comprehensive visual arts, media exploration and art history and theory; (2) creative writing and literature; and (3) music, which includes a general introduction to music for all classes, as well as story telling for the younger students and specific instrument instruction for older students. The art program culminates with an Art Night celebration in February, a musical performance and gallery showcasing the visual arts.
