Curriculum components
- Various effective teaching methods target students with different learning styles: Balanced Literacy Instruction, Researched Best Practices, Math Investigations (K–5), Connected Math (6–7, Direct instruction, Hands-On Science through Kits,Writing Process, Kidwriting, REACH Associates practices,theme and Standards-based Instruction.
- Schoolwide focus on literacy development and enhancement forall students through Different Ways of Knowing Curriculumand Design, REACH Associates practices and Reading First.
- We are also a Reading First school for grades K–3. Reading First is a grant focused on early literacy instruction.
- School Technology Plan prepares students for the future, with a technology classfor all students, and a full mobile lab for special projects. The school is wireless. Upper grade students have access to document projectors and cameras for project use inthe classroom and school.
- Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a college prep program for underserved students. This program is embedded in grades 5 and 6, and an AVID class is offered for studentsmeeting AVID criteria.
Staff
- At Jason Lee there are 18 classroom teachers, 5 special instruction teachers, a reading coach, a school counselor, a school psychologist, 2 speech/language development teachers, Music, PE, Art, 12 educational assistants in general and special education classrooms. The office is staffed with a full-time principal\'s secretary and part-time school secretary. We also have two custodians and two cafeteria workers.
Parent and family support
- Our PTA is very active, holding monthly meetings, movie nights and \"second Saturdays\", a volunteer event. Site Council is another parent leadership group, meeting with staff to determine school improvement plans and staff development. Family members also offer assistance in coordinating schoolwide activities and volunteering in classrooms, the library and special projects.
- Families offer support through Parent Groups (PTA), Local School Advisory Committee (LSAC) and Site Council.
- Title I family involvement includes parenting classes and family nights with interpreters provided for English language learners. Our school counselor holds monthly parent teas, and coordinates Avid nights to help our upper grade students prepare for college.
Special programs and features
- Jason Lee is a K-8, schoolwide Title I program, in the last year of our Reading First grant at the K–3 levels. We offer technology, music and P.E. to all students in addition to our small school environment. We have an artist in residence, Chess for Success, a landscape project underway, and have applied to have a SUN school operate here after school next year to offer a variety of after-school opportunities. Our PTA is active and hosts a movie night each month and coordinates \"Second Saturdays\" where families come for treats and volunteering once a month.
- General music for K–7 students. Instrumental instruction for7th grade students. 6th and 7th grade students may up for enrichment classes in music, featuring stringsor drumming.
- English as a Second Language (ESL), an inclusive,collaborative model, offering targeted instruction for students learning English as a second Language.
- Yearly schoolwide celebration of the arts and learning.
- Artist in residence, leading a mural project.
- Learning Center provides targeted academic services and support to students.
- AVID, a college preparatory program offered at the 5th-8th grades.
- Self-contained Special Education classes for students with behavioral problems and communication needs.
- General PE for K–7 students, including gymnastics.Enrichment classes offered for 6th and 7th grade students instrength training, aerobics and skill development.
- A full-time school counselor, who provides instruction in each classroom in behavioral and social skills. Additionally, the counselor facilitates small groups for students in need of anger management, social skills and leadership skills.
- Child-oriented library contains over 9,000 titles, displays on literacy and multicultural themes, cable TV and resource materials (print and electronic).
