About:
King School is a PK–8 learning community located in the heart of NE Portland. We offer a variety of activities during and after school for our families and community. We are in the application stages of becoming an International Baccalaureate school for the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and the Middle Years Programme (MYP) for our students. We believe in making Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's dream a reality not only for our community, but for all communities.
Pre School: Half day AM and PM sessions.
Kindergarten: Full day.
Kindergarten Round-up: Pre-kindergarten and kindergarten round-up will be in February 2010.
Childcare: YMCA.
Focus options: Arts, International Baccalaureate.

Curriculum components
- A variety of teaching methods and techniques are used to meet the different learning styles of students. High expectations are set for all students, and we use various behavior management programs to assist us in maintaining a positive school environment. Our staff has received Safe & Civil training as well as Positive Behavior Support training.
- Math Investigations: District math adopted curriculum is used for grades K–5 as well as Every Day Counts Calendar Math. Connected Mathematics is used for grades 6-8, and Algebra for 8th grade.
- Our current reading and intervention programs are: Scott Foresman, Horizons, ERI, Read Naturally, EDMARK, STAR and Rewards. We also use Kid Writing for our K–2 students and Phase I Writing strategies for grades 3–5. 6-8 grade students are required to do common assignments each trimester.
- Martin Luther King School is a PK–8 institution. All students attend school five days a week unless otherwise noted by the calendar.
- PE, Music, Art, Spanish and Library services are provided as enrichment opportunities for students.

Parent and family support
- We offer PTA and Site Council to parents that want to be more involved in school fundraising and improvement.
- We encourage parent volunteers. Family members are encouraged to volunteer in classrooms, in the library and on field trips.
- Parents are kept informed through a monthly newsletter from the principal, a classroom newsletter sent home from the classroom teachers and the student calendar/handbook.
Special programs and features
- King offers an Early Reading First program for pre-kindergarten and Reading First for K–3 students focused on building strong reading and literacy skills.
- King School had the first \"I Have a Dream\" program in Oregon.
- We also offer a Friends of Children program in which additional support services are provided to students that may need extra assistance.
