About:
Irvington is a neighborhood K-8 school with a diverse population of students. The school has an active PTA that is involved in fundraising to support the arts, extracurricular activities and field trips. The PTA is also involved in education advocacy work in the greater Portland community and in the state of Oregon. Parents and community members are welcomed into the school community as volunteers, who read to students; help in classrooms and the library; and lend a hand with Picture Day, field trips and art classes. Irvington is connected to the community through its partnerships with Arnerich Massena and Associates, Xerox Corporation and the Portland Reading Foundation.

Student learning environment
- Irvington is open to all students throughout the Portland School District
- High volume of parent involvement and volunteerism. The SMART program hosts 70 volunteers and serves grades K–2. Employees of Arnerich Massena and Associates are math and reading tutors before school and homework helpers after school
- Kindergarten through second grade classrooms pair with 4th-8th grade students to create a sense of community. \"Buddy classrooms\" work together on literacy, mathematics and self-esteem projects. 6-8th grade students assist with many school wide events
- Emphasis on understanding diversity and experiencing multicultural education
- Teachers use developmentally appropriate practices, project based-learning and learning centers. The writing process and storyline methods are used by teachers
- Irvington has fee-for-service full-day kindergarten classes. A tuition based pre-kindergarten program for 4-year-olds is offered through the Extended Day Care program
- Arnerich Massena and Associates partners with Irvington to provide a 4-week summer journalism camp, as well as 2science/math camps during the summer. Arnerich Massena received the Portland Spirit Award for its commitment to serving students in the Irvington school community for many years
Curriculum components
- Special Education Support Services
- Special emphasis placed on problem solving in both classroom and social settings
- The school has a computer lab with 30 iMac computers, and each classroom has at least 2 computers. K-8 students use technology as a tool for learning. Students can access online learning at home through Learning.com.
- Emphasis on integrated and project-based curriculum. Focus on writing, reading, mathematics and science throughout the grades. Storyline is a strategy for integrated instruction used in many classrooms.
- Second Steps is the classroom guidance curriculum taught by the guidance counselor in every K-5 classroom. Steps to Respect:Anti-Bullying curriculum is taught by the guidance counselor in grades 6-8
- Steps to Success curriculum is taught in 6th grade by the guidance counselor
- K-8 physical education program
- K-2 Dance Program
- 3rd grade study of Portland Bridges including walking tour of downtown and jet boat tour of the Portland bridges
- 4th grade Oregon Trail Overnignt experience to culminate the study of the history of Oregon
- 6-8th grade Science Fair
- Starting with kindergarten, all students have individual assessment portfolios through the 5th grade in writing, reading and math.
- TAG needs are met by the classroom teacher with differentiated instruction. K-5 TAG enrichment opportunities provided by parent volunteers
- Spanish and Algebra for high school credit is available for 7th and 8th grade students
- 6-8th grade arts weekly enrichment classes include visual arts and drama instruction
Staff
- Staff members engage in shared leadership across the areas of curriculum and instruction, K–8 program design and the school improvement process.
- 20 classroom teachers, 2 certified support staff, half time guidance counselor, 1 PE specialist, 5 special education para professionals,half time Spanish teacher, Special education teachers, half time ELL teacher, part time speech pathologist and school psychologist, half time music teacher, a media specialist, principal and assistant principal, one full and two half time custodians
- Targeted professional development for staff and administrators in differentiated instruction, anti-bullying and harassment curriculum and empathy and problem-solving curriculum and diversity and cultural proficiency.
Parent and family support
- Parents coordinate fundraising efforts for school activities and special projects. Parents are welcomed, needed and used as volunteers in classrooms, in the library, tutoring individual students, material preparation, etc.
- Community members also volunteer as SMART readers. Participants in the reading programs receive training and supervision from staff
- Active Site Council and PTA. PTA sponsored community auction, Spaghetti Dinner, Script and gift wrap sale

- Black History Month Celebration sponsored by the PTA is planned and organized by Irvington staff and parent volunteers. It includes participation by Irvington students and community artists

- Reading is Fundamental (RIF) program provides free books to students during the school year.
