About:
Daniel A. Grout Elementary is a small neighborhood school that encourages parent and community involvement. The staff are dedicated professionals who collaborate to achieve a warm, caring, safe and respectful atmosphere where cultural diversity is celebrated. Grout offers a schoolwide literacy program that provides small-group instruction daily, focusing on reading, writing and speaking skills. The school also uses Junior Great Books to build higher-order thinking skills. In addition, physical education, computers, music and opportunities in the visual and performing arts are provided to all students.
Pre School: On-site preschool provided by Multnomah County Early Childhood Program.
Kindergarten: Full-day kindergarten is available.
Kindergarten Round-up: February 21, 2008.
Childcare: On-site childcare is provided by the YMCA.
Information Sessions: Open House on Thursday, February 21, 2008.
Before and after school programs
- Daniel A. Grout Elementary is a SUN Community School site. Academic and activity classes are offered daily after school.
- Students in grades one through five have the opportunity for academic support after school. Reading and math support is offered to younger students, and homework club is offered to older students.
- Many sports and activity classes are offered through the SUN Community School program. These tennis, basketball, track, soccer, cooking, chess, arts and crafts.
- A.K.A. Science and MAD Science instructors provide hands-on science activities, which extend benchmark units at the grade level.
- Violin instruction is available to fourth and fifth graders. Students enrolled in the strings program meet twice a week and perform concerts for Grout students and other audiences.
Community partnerships
- Reed College Biology partnership for grades four and five.
- City of Portland Environmental Services, in conjunction with a grant from McCall Oil and Metro, provide habitat studies and site restoration for grades three through five.
- SMART (Start Making a Reader Today) program.
- Kaiser Permanente Health Insurance.
- Our bus takes students to Meyer Boys and Girls Club after school and offers families an option for after school care.
- OHSU dental services for primary students.
- Ross Island Early Risers Kiwanis Club supports for ourcitizenship programs.
Student learning environment
- Grout students and Holgate residents living in the Odd Fellows Retirement Center form a bridge between age and cultures. Ongoing activities include written communication, visits to perform band and strings musical programs, drama productions, lunches and holiday celebrations.
- Staff works closely with each child\'s parents to develop a quality educational program to fit the strengths and needs of each child.
- Parent volunteering is encouraged in order to build home/school relationships and provide attention and support that is more individualized.
- Students are trained in technology to be peer helpers for using the Internet and building computer skills.
- Cooperative learning, multiple intelligences, individual learning styles, cross-grade-level partnering activities and various types of groupings are incorporated throughout the instructional day.
Curriculum components
- Certified teachers provide instruction in special education through the Educational Resource Center and English as a Second Language Program for students whose first language is other than English.
- Our math program has a teacher peer-coaching component utilizing math specialists who work closely with our staff to provide ongoing in-service. The Balanced Approach to
Math Model: Developing Number Sense Through Reasoning and Communication, Every Day Counts, Math Their Way, Box It and Bag It Math, Math in the Mind\'s Eye and the district\'s adopted math program are all incorporated into grade-level
lessons as appropriate.
- Field trips at all grade levels throughout the community and city. Fifth graders go on overnight trips to study the tide pools and marine science at OMSI\'s Camp Kiwanilong
camp site.
- Junior Great Books provides instruction in higher-order thinking skills to increase ALL students\' skills in interpretive comprehension.
- Schoolwide literacy program offers daily, small-group instruction focusing on reading and writing skills. Public speaking and drama are included.
- Schoolwide Accelerated Reading allows students to read self selected books and novels at their own pace. Computer assisted ongoing assessment shows student comprehension and enjoyment of literature.
Staff
- Experienced master teachers continue their own professional development through all-school program goals.
- Instructional planning at all grade levels articulates skills and ties them to benchmarks.
- Collaborative staff plans for and actively participates in schoolwide reform. Staff reform efforts have been recognized nationally through educational journals and presentations at conferences.
Parent and family support
- Site Council meets regularly, and feedback is communicated to larger community.
- YMCA Day Care on site. Hours are from 6:30 am to 6:00 pm and includes supervised care on most school closure days.
- SUN Community School and PTA provide regular family events.
- A variety of evening activities support parents\'capacity to enhance their child\'s academic learning through six types of involvement: parenting, communication, volunteering, learning at home, decision making, and collaborating with the community. Daycare is provided for all evening functions.
- Evening grade curriculum events allow parents to discuss state and district assessments, benchmarks and homework expectations.
- Evening classes are offered for adults through the SUN Community School Program. Such offerings might include yoga, watercolor, aerobics and English.
Special programs and features
- SMART (Start Making A Reader Today) Program: Volunteers from the local community donate over 200 hours a month in order for kindergarten through second grade students to have individual tutors twice a week.
- Specially designed Artist-in-Residence programs are developed to provide art activities.
- ESL (English as a Second Language) program provides special help to students in order to develop English language skills and to gain access to mainstream curriculum.
- In-School Theater Program: Nationally recognized theater director coaches students in the fine art of drama. Students write and produce original plays, incorporating
music, dance and art. Evening performances for the community are held quarterly to showcase the students\' talents.
- Full-Day Kindergarten Program: Early reading and math learning is emphasized. Kindergarten students have access to a PE teacher, drama coach, speech pathologist and artist-in-residence. The teacher incorporates music and movement throughout the day to reinforce and teach new learning.
- Saturday Academy: Students exceeding benchmarks have the opportunity to work with published authors and poets to engage in challenging writing experiences.
- Special programs include library time, vocal music, computer and physical education.
