Community partnerships
- Roseway Heights K8 partners with PTA, LSAC, SUN Schools, Hand-in-Hand, Multnomah Early Childhood Program, Project Alliance, Portland Impact, Oregon Council for Hispanic Advancement (OCHA), Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Reading Buddies and the Roseway and Rose City Park Neighborhood Associations. These partnerships provide services for all students and families.
Student learning environment

- Student groupings for instruction are flexible and diverse to suit a wide range of abilities and learning styles.
- Strong emphasis on academic excellence and personal achievement, giving all students opportunities for involvement and success. Student accomplishment is recognized and reinforced through Student Recognition Assemblies for 1st–5th graders and Honor Role Assemblies for 6th–8th graders.
- The arts, technology, library resources, PE, Spanish and guidance classes are offered at all grade levels. Strong Artist-in-Residence program offers classes in modern dance and theater.
Curriculum components
- Roseway Heights curriculum balances continued growth in reading for understanding, writing, speaking, mathematics, science, health and social studies with exploratory experiences in the arts, technology and Spanish and an emphasis on personal wellness through PE classes two to three times per week.
- Spanish instruction is included for all students in grades K–5 and continues, with the option of studying for two full years in 6th–8th grade to earn high school credit. 6th–8th graders may also take a high school band class at Madison High School at the end of their day at Roseway Heights. At least 50% of all 8th graders take high school algebra. Lab science is part of the 6th-8th grade program.
- The AVID program provides support with advanced organizational skills, higher-level questioning/thinking and college preparedness for motivated 8th graders.
- The Striving Readers program offers extra support for older students who are behind in reading, through providing a smaller student-teacher ratio, research-based practices focused on comprehension and vobaculary skills and a Reading Coach.
- Small, guided reading groups, Writers Workshop, hands-on math and science classes and social studies that includes experience-based lessons are all prominent features in our K–5 program.
Staff
- Positive relationships between staff members and students are important at Roseway Heights. Safe, civil behavior is modeled, taught and reinforced. High expectations for behavior, attendance and engagement in learning are communicated to all students.
- Roseway Heights staff emphasize thinking, communication and organizational skills and a safe, healthy school climate.
- 30 classroom teachers, 8 elective teachers, 6 special education teachers, 2 ESL teachers, 1 school psychologist, 10 educational assistants, 1 counselor, 3 secretaries, 1 assistant principal, 1 principal, 2 cafeteria workers, 3 custodians, 1 part-time occupational therapist.
Parent and family support
- Families are involved in PTA, Local School Advisory Committee (LSAC), Roseway Heights Site Council, Safety Committee, Reading Buddies, Arts Program, SUN program, Roseway Heights Foundation and more.
- Family involvement helps students succeed, creates a more welcoming and safe school environment and is warmly encouraged.
- Family members help plan and coordinate school activities, assist with health screenings, volunteer in classrooms and the library, accompany students on field trips, help plan and carry out school improvements, help supervise at recess and in the cafeteria, volunteer in the office and raise funds to support our programs.
- Roseway Heights K–8 works with a very active and supportive parent community. Parents are active in PTA, the Roseway Heights Foundation, LSAC, Site Council, Safety Committee, the Arts Program, Reading Buddies and more. Roseway Heights welcomes parents who'd like to contribute to their child's education and to the entire school community.
Special programs and features
- AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) prepares students to take Advanced Placement classes in high school, graduate from high school and go on to college and/or a family-wage job. Striving Readers works with 8th graders who are two to three years below grade level in reading to bring their reading comprehension and organizational skills up to grade level. Our Artist-in-Residence program places a professional dance or theatre teacher with every classroom for a 4 to 8 week residency.
- Programs include Buddy Classes, Reading Buddies, Madison Elementary Teaching Assistants, Algebra for 8th graders, high school credit for Spanish, high school credit for band at Madison, TAG, ESL, Special Education Learning Centers, 6th–8th grade Life Skills Class, 6th–8th grade Behavior Class, School Counseling Program, homework clubs, OCHA, Portland Impact, Project Alliance and SUN Community School.
