Before and after school programs
- The PTA-sponsored Cool Schools program offers classes before and after school. These classes have included foreign language, art, chess, crafts, cooking, drama, computers, first aid, math and science. In addition, there are many neighborhood sports teams and Campfire/Scout activities. The Duniway After School Program is managed by parents and provides before and after school daycare.
Community partnerships
- Wells Fargo (SE 45th and Woodstock branch), Multnomah County branch libraries and several parent-owned businesses. Financial contributions from many neighborhood businesses helped reinstate teaching positions for next year. Staff and parents have been responsible for procuring several grants for Duniway, including those from the Portland Public Schools Foundation, Intel, Goals 2000, Fred Meyer and Scholastic.
Student learning environment
- The music program teaches students to enjoy self-expression through music, as well as music performance and appreciation. The Duniway PTA sponsors band and choir for interested students.
- The Duniway School Technology plan is a comprehensive document developed to guide technology purchases and increase student and staff competency in using technology tools effectively.
- Enrichment opportunities are designed to extend the school program and build on student strengths and interests.
- The school climate is safe, positive and child-centered. Cooperative problem solving, respect and responsible behavior are emphasized.
- Duniway School has an outstanding academic program that is enriched by activities sponsored and organized by an active parent community.
Curriculum components
- The site council, consisting of staff and parents, developed the Duniway School Improvement Plan. This plan focuses on student achievement with emphasis on increased performance in reading, written language and mathematics.
- Duniway has an active Talented and Gifted (TAG) program that provides opportunities for qualified students to achieve at the appropriate rate and level.
- Curriculum develops higher-level thinking and problem-
solving skills. Science, social studies, the arts and
technology are also important components of Duniway's
program. - The instructional program is integrated and coordinated across grade levels. Staff work closely together to align curriculum to ensure students achieve at the highest possible levels.
- Duniway staff use a variety of strategies to support student learning. Curriculum and instruction are designed to prepare students to meet state standards and have continued success at the middle and high school levels.
Staff
- Reading strategies, Discipline Based Art Education (DBAE), current math instruction (including Everyday Counts, Math Their Way and Problem Solving), math and writing assessment training, science and technology are just some of the staff development activities that involve teachers.
- The staff includes 16 homeroom teachers, specialists (music, Resource Center, media and child-development), secretary, principal, custodians, cook, special education itinerants and many parent volunteers.
- Our solid staff joins with parents in setting high expectations for all students.
Parent and family support
- PTA offers foreign language (French, German, Spanish) and art classes, provides volunteer tutors and assistance in music and reading. Annual fundraisers include holiday and spring tours of neighborhood homes and a spring carnival.
- The school site council reviews school data and provides a yearly plan for school improvement and staff in-service.
- Parents and family members provide exceptional support for school programs through involvement in PTA, Local School Advisory Committee (LSAC), site council and Foundation, as well as volunteer and fundraising activities.
Special programs and features
- Duniway offers a full-day, fee-based kindergarten program on a first come, first served basis.
- For more than 70 years, Duniway School has been the center of the Eastmoreland neighborhood. This beautiful school, designated as a historical landmark, includes two gyms, a large cafeteria and an auditorium with stage and balcony.
- A strong academic program, plans for school improvement and technology and varied enrichment activities provide a balanced educational program for students.
- The STARS tutoring program matches adult volunteers with students for reading assistance.
- Duniway's library contains 9,000 titles, many displays on
literary and multicultural themes, computers, Internet
connection, cable television and resource materials (both
print and electronic).
