Testimonials
- I am proud to be the principal of Creston. I am
celebrating my fourth year here and have continually been
impressed by the students, staff and parent community.
Great things are in store for our emerging K-8th program
and I am excited about what the future will bring.
Dana Jacobs - The Creston School community reminds me most of a big,
loving family that works AND plays together exceptionally
well. Strong parent and volunteer involvement are
exemplified by the recent completion of Creston’s Reading
Garden. A dedicated group of parents, students, teachers
and neighbors turned an asphalt slab into an oasis for
everyone to enjoy. This lesson of working together to
achieve a goal is one that I hope my children never forget-
I know that I won’t!

Student learning environment
- Creston is a safe and caring school community that works in partnership with families to provide the best educational program possible for children. We strive for excellence!

- Diversity of our students, their families, our staff and our community is recognized and celebrated.
Curriculum components
- Creston's instructional program focuses on student achievement with emphasis on increased performance in reading, writing and mathematics.
- Curriculum and instruction are designed to prepare and support students in meeting and exceeding state standards.
- An integrated and balanced literacy program, utilizing a 60-minute literacy block and reading specialists assigned to every homeroom, supports students' acquisition and development of reading, writing and speaking skills.
- An experiential, hands-on math program teaches students to be problem solvers and mathematical thinkers. There is anemphasis on increasing students' ability to reason and solve problems logically.
- A multi-year arts plan enables students to work with different artists-in-residence each year, exploring art forms such as drama, ceramics, painting and drawing, dance, puppetry, mask-making and story-telling.
- Talented and Gifted (TAG) instruction is provided in the homeroom setting. We have a goal to identify more children to participate in the TAG program.
- Special education students and English language learners are served in an inclusive model in the general education homerooms. These students, as well as other learners, are also supported in small group settings outside the classroom with assistance for their specific needs.
Staff
- Twelve homeroom teachers, three literacy specialists, two ESL teachers, a special education teacher and two paraprofessionals are on staff for 2006-2007. A Child Development Specialist (CDS) works with our program on a half-time basis. In addition, half-time PE and music specialists offer classes to students twice per week. Students are also supported by our school psychologist and speech/language pathologist funded by the Special Education Program.
- Staff development focuses on training to prepare all students to meet and exceed state standards. Intense work through our Literacy Partnership with Leanna Traill from New Zealand occurred during the 2001-2002 year. Our yearlong plan, featuring grade-level thematic units, is utilized to create a strong academic experience for our students. During 2006-2007, our professional development will focus on writing and math.
Parent and family support
- Parents volunteer in our classrooms and also serve in leadership positions on our Site Council and PTA Board. PTA efforts contribute to our program in order to enhance student learning and support our staff. Parent leaders recently organized a local Stand for Children Team that is actively engaged in work to support school funding initiatives and other related work.
- Annual family events are planned, including a Back To SchoolPicnic and an End of the Year Celebration at Creston Park.
