CSS teachers believe students should be empowered to take responsibility for their own learning, as well as their social and emotional choices.

Curriculum components
- What is Constructivism: (Constructivism is a philosophy; Storyline is a methodology.)
Curriculum is presented whole to part, with emphasis on big concepts
Pursuit of student questions is highly valued
Curricular activities rely heavily on primary sources of data and manipulative materials
Students are viewed as thinkers with emerging theories about the world.
- CSS teachers guide and assist children in learning through experience and experiments. Our students develop and demonability to create questions, formulate solutions and apply the results throughout their lives.
- Built on a foundation of Piaget and constructivism since 1986, we have been preparing students to be critically thinking, self-motivated and responsible world citizens.
- CSS utilizes hands-on, project-based, inquiry-rich curriculum, which is aligned with Portland Public Schools and statewide benchmarks.
- The Creative Science School features Scottish Storyline, a method of integrating thematic units around a central story with characters, setting and plot. Events and problems are added, and the result is high-interest, creative learning, which addresses multiple intelligences and rigorous standards.
- The Science in Creative Science School is the scientific method, where students create hypotheses, test them and come up with answers that help them better understand their world.
- Teamwork is key as we build mutual respect among teachers, students, and parents.
Parent and family support
- The parent community plays a vital role at Creative Science School. Parent involvement is essential and there are many opportunities for connection, such as assisting in the classroom, helping with events or working in our fabulous outdoor space.
We join together for a yearly camp-out, auction, potlucks and many other community events throughout the year.
