Student learning environment
- Most students are placed in multi-age groupings and spend
two years with one teacher. - All students are considered talented and gifted at Arleta.
Teachers and parents are responsible for identifying,
focusing on and building students\' strengths. - Community is considered an important part of learning.
Connections are made between school and the working world. - Programs focus on developing independent, self-sustaining
learning. - Staff members use teaching techniques appropriate for each
child\'s stage of development.
Curriculum components
- Balanced literacy within two-hour blocks of time provides
students with intensive, high-quality instruction in
literacy. - Project-oriented, child-centered activities provide real-
world experiences for students. - Computers throughout the buildings and two computer labs allow for the latest in instructional technology to support learning.
- The all-school goal is that every student become a successful reader and writer who is able to use those skills for continued learning.

- A mobile Mac laptop lab that supports many classrooms
An elective program for 6-8th graders with up to 12 options for classes taught on a semester basis by the upper grade team and some of the specialists. - Opportunity to offer upper grade math content for all students that includes Algebra for 8th graders who qualify and students in 7th grade if their scores also qualify.
Staff
- All staff members have expertise and experience in helping students whose primary language is not English gain new language skills.
- Continual focus on best practices of literacy theory and instruction result in high levels of staff expertise in this area.
- Our music teacher instructs all students K-6th grade in vocal music. Strings is offered for 7-8th graders with a beginning strings group forming in the 5th grade.
- A full time couselor works with all K-8th grade students in either units of study, support groups, leadership classes or individually. Our counselor also desined and manages an upper grade peer mediation group called \"Peace Patrol.\" This group works during the K-5 lunch recess to support mediation among the younger students in the building.
Parent and family support
- Empowerment helps families become more involved in their child\'s education.
- Opportunities for family involvement include Arleta Planning Team (Site Council), advisory groups, classroom support, Arleta Great Kids, the Arleta Boosters, book exchange and Student Store.
- Family members participate in school activities, including family math, art, science and technology evenings.
- Arleta Boosters parent group supports our children and school through various fundraising activities planned throughout each year and direct family support to staff during special events.
- Many teachers make home visits before the school year begins to meet their students and families.
Special programs and features
- Start Making A Reader Today (SMART) Program.
- ESL students and students with special learning needs are served in regular classrooms throughout the school called \"inclusion\").
- All classrooms are multi-age groupings. Most students also remain with the same teacher for two years.
- Numerous world language groups are represented at the school. Approximately one-fourth of the student body are ESL students.
- Arleta is a Schoolwide Title 1 school with a focus on improved literacy achievement for all students.
