About:
Alameda supports learning by providing a program in which a strong academic foundation and environment nurtures and encourages the development of every student. The arts are integrated into content areas through Discipline-Based Art Education, student performances, Young audiences assemblies, artists-in-residence,and family art nights. All students have access to current technology in classrooms and in a state-of-the-art media center and technology lab. Physical education and music are also offered. Teachers use a variety of teaching methods and tailor instruction to support students with different learning styles and needs. The curriculum is enhanced by community field trips and hands-on learning. Buddy Classrooms team older and younger students for projects and activities. The community is involved in all aspects of Alameda School through the PTA, Site Council, Foundation and volunteer opportunities in classrooms.

Kindergarten: Four sections of full-day with 1/2 day students added to those sections.
Kindergarten Round-up: Feb. 9, 2010, 9:30 am. and 6:30 pm.
Childcare: Before and after school care provided by the YMCA.
Information Sessions: Weekly tours of the school will begin after Kindergarten Round-Up. Please call the school for more information on tours.
Before and after school programs
- YMCA Daycare, as well as a variety of enrichment classes, such as drama, foreign languages, Chess Club, Mad Science, band, choir and art.
Community partnerships
- Grant support has been provided by Young Audiences, Intel, Legacy, Lloyd Center and the Alameda Foundation.
Student learning environment
- Teaching staff at Alameda use a variety of teaching methods to serve students with different learning styles.
- An active Talented and Gifted (TAG) program provides opportunities for students to have their needs met in the regular classroom. Other opportunities are provided as they become available.
- Students who have individual needs in all academic areas are provided support through a Special Education Learning Center.
- Alameda School provides a safe, nurturing child-centered place for children to develop.
- The Alameda School community is very active and involved in all aspects of the school program.
Curriculum components
- Buddy Classrooms team up older and younger students for projects and activities.
- Alameda\'s program supports the general Portland School District curriculum, as outlined in the curriculum frameworks, through hands-on math, guided and novel reading groups, writing process,and science process.
- The arts are featured through Discipline Based Art Education, chorus, performances, plays,and Young Audiences assemblies and residencies.
- Technology is offered to all students through the use of Smartboards, and two computer labs. All students visit the computer lab at least once each week.
- Music and physical education provided by specialists are an integral part of instruction.
- We have a PTA-sponsored Reading Friends program as well as a full-time teacher who works with students,who need extra support to reach grade-level goals.
Staff
- Staff includes 27 classroom teachers supported by special-instruction staff, a counselor, assistant principal, reading and math specialists, speech /language specialist, media, music and physical education teachers.
- Our professional development is driven by our School Improvement Plan.
Parent and family support
- Parents are actively involved in the PTA, Alameda Foundation and Alameda Site Council and its committees. A high percentage of Alameda parents and community members volunteer in classrooms for special activities.
Special programs and features
- Family math and science nights and family art nights provide fun, educational activities for families. Fourth graders participate in the Oregon Trail Overnight program and fifth graders visit Camp Hancock in eastern Oregon.
- Jr. Great Books Programs
- The arts offer a strong component and balance to our curriculum. Third and fifth graders are involved in musical and drama productions.
- Through Reading Friends program, volunteers help young students become confident and enthusiastic readers.
- The PTA sponsors several Family Fun Nights throughout the year.
