Student learning environment
- Each learning community at Madison High School provides arigorous, relevant and student-centered academic learning environment for high school students. They promote academic achievement for college and career preparedness and foster personal relationships among students, teachers and parents.
- Each learning community offers a portfolio of high schooloptions, including Pathways development, for students and families in Portland Public Schools.
Curriculum components
- At Madison High School, we believe personalized teaching and learning is the key to helping our students achieve at their highest level. Madison now has three learning communities called M, H and S. Each community\'s administrator, teachers, counselor and support staff work collaboratively to ensure students are prepared for college, career and citizenship beyond graduation.
- Madison High School is the home of three highly popular focus-option programs: Academy of Speech andCommunications, Academy of Science and Natural Resources and Health Services. These focus-option programs are embedded within our learning community structure.
- PPS graduation requirements for the Class of 2009 and beyond include opportunities for Pathways development in Arts & Communications, Natural Resources, Human Resources and Health Services in at least one or more learning community.
- Comprehensive special programs designed to serve Talented and Gifted (TAG), English Language Learners and Special Education students are an integral part of each learning community\'s curriculum.
Staff
- Madison High School currently reflects a professional staff of 61 classroom teachers, 4 counselors (including one counselor assigned to each learning community plus a prevention/retention counselor who works with enrollment, family involvement, AVID, Gear Up and ASPIRE programs), a campus librarian, paraprofessional staff including over twenty educational assistants and clerical support staff. The administrative team consists of a principal and three learning community administrators, as well as a dean of students/athletic director.
- Ongoing staff development activities involve all Madison teachers and support staff. Ongoing professional development supports teachers in curriculum development, instructional practice and assessment, which guide students toward acquisition of academic benchmarks. Additionally, the Madison staff is working on literacy, mathematics, writing and publication and project-based learning strategies within each learning community.
Parent and family support
- Parents and community volunteers assist each learning community in a variety of settings and programs, including support in the College and Career Center, Library and customized areas of support determined within each learning community.
- Madison parents and community members participate in their respective learning community parent support programs and learning community Site Councils.
- Because of our diverse population, we are making special efforts to reach out to our parents representing our Latino Hispanic, Asian, Russian and Somali students. Outreach efforts include monthly meetings and a variety of academic support programs in concert with our many community partners, including SEI, OCHA, IRCO, Asian Family Services, Lutheran Family Services, etc.
Special programs and features
- Three 9–12 learning communities: In each learning community at Madison High School, students build strong relationships with themselves and a team of teachers with special emphasison several programs of study that support Pathways Development, project-based learning, academic and organizational skills, student portfolios and targeted programs for student assistance.
- Advanced Placement and honors courses available at Madison High School include: Chemistry, Environmental Science, Biology, Calculus, English Language and Composition, US History, European History, World History, Economics, Government, Psychology, Human Geography, Studio Art, Art History, Music Theory, Spanish Language, Spanish Literature. Dual college credit in Spanish is also available with PCC.
- M School strives to be a learning community where students are participants in an environment of rigor, relevance and community. Students are first taught how to succeed within a challenging high school curriculum and then prepared for their futures (i.e., college and careers). Respect, accomplishment and service stand as paramount values for students and staff. The teachers in M School emphasize projects, authentic assessments and genuine support. The students are challenged as they experience academic achievements through their own demonstration, performance and advocacy. Through demonstration, students complete authentic, challenging activities reflecting their knowledge and skills. Through performance, students exhibit their knowledge and skills beyond the classroom. Through advocacy, students apply their knowledge and skills to benefit others.
- The Academy of Speech and Communications Program within the M School includes a comprehensive curriculum in speech and communications a long with service learning components. There are multiple opportunities for students to expand their speaking skills in a variety of settings including project presentations, speech competitions and mentoring to younger students within Madison and throughout the school district.
- H School is an academic and supportive community of educational excellence where students are active, self-disciplined, hardworking and lifelong learners. Students are prepared to think clearly, feel deeply and live as socially responsible and caring individuals. H School is designed to support this mission by sharing: Common Focus through schoolwide essential questions, critical thinking and depth over breadth in curriculum; High Expectations via a college-ready curriculum preparing students for a wide range of post-high school options with additional supports; Active, Performance-Based Learning through relevant and rigorous field-based experiences, public displays of learning and an interdisciplinary curriculum; and Strong Personal Relationships, including ongoing communication and family and community participation in student learning and exhibitions.
- The Academy of Sciences and Natural Resources within the H School actively involves enrolled students in field trips, community service projects, environmental monitoring activities and environmental issues. School/business partnerships with local and regional government agencies, private businesses and local community colleges and universities create an exciting experiential program for Madison students.
- S School is committed to engaging students in creative, rigorous and challenging ways through hands-on experiences. We work with our students, families and the wider community to deliver a quality education program that results in all students graduating well prepared for college, work and active participation in their community. S School uses a combination of project-based and interdisciplinary methods as a core instructional strategy. In addition, our program focuses on the following four areas: Demonstrating Proficiencies in writing, reading, technology, communication, math/science inquiry in addition to required course work; Broadening Experiences connecting students\' learning to their own community and others; Exhibitions of Learning through public demonstrations and real-world applications; and Strong teacher/student relationships, building supportive multi-year relationships with teachers committed to student success.
- Madison\'s four-year Health Services program within the S School provides comprehensive curriculum and experiential training in a variety of health care fields and includes on-site field experiences in the junior and senior years.
