Student learning environment
- Cleveland High School is an urban high school in the heart of Portland. Its student body and adult staff reflect the composition of the city in general. The school is highly heterogeneous, drawing students from the vast range of socio-economic and ethnic groupings found in a large metropolitan area.
- Cleveland offers students international baccalaureate coursework and the opportunity to earn an IB Diploma, in addition to its already rigorous academic curriculum.
- Honors classes are offered in English, foreign languages (four), mathematics, science and the social sciences. Students who complete the advanced offerings may enroll in the Reed College Young Scholars program or the Portland State University Challenge program.
- Cleveland provides a comprehensive academic program with college-preparatory offerings, vocational and business courses and an alternative program.
- Cleveland also has two in-house Portland State University courses, one in calculus and the other in physics. These offer high school credit, as well as eight quarter hours each of PSU credit.
- Approximately 80 percent of Cleveland's graduates pursue studies after high school.
Curriculum components
- Cleveland is the business management and marketing magnet high school, with facilities uncommon to most Oregon high schools. Cleveland is part of a cooperative program with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and the U.S. Forest Service. The school offers advanced study in biology, chemistry and physics.
- Cleveland is one of two International Baccalaureate high schools in Portland featuring IB coursework, a full IB diploma and IB certificates in individual subjects.Cleveland also offers a Spanish Dual Immersion program and Mandarin Chinese Immersion program.
- Cleveland is distinguished by its visual and performing arts department, its newspaper, yearbook, photography publications program and its athletic achievements. Year after year, both teams and individual athletes earn league and statewide recognition and advance to higher levels of competition.
Parent and family support
- Parental involvement comes in the form of volunteers assisting during the school day, the Local School Advisory Committee/PTA, the Booster Club, Cleveland Foundation and the Parents of Performing Arts Students (POPS). Fundraising culminates in the yearly Cleveland auction.
- Commerce Cleveland Alumni Association works tirelessly to raise money for Cleveland events and projects. One way is through a fun golf tournament in August.
