Mary Rieke Elementary School is proud of its strong tradition of excellence a tradition that creates high expectations for student achievement within a warm and nurturing community of learners. Every student is important at Rieke. Our teaching staff is experienced, dedicated and committed to encouraging excellence while celebrating each child’s unique talents and individual successes. Children are inspired to be creative, taught to be responsible and encouraged to be respectful of themselves and others. In addition to thriving in an outstanding program for academic achievement and creative opportunities, Rieke students participate in community service integrated with core content areas. Through service, Rieke students learn the value of community participation and contribution. The high level of achievement at Rieke is a reflection of the powerful partnership between home, school and community. Working together, we build success for children as they become competent people and caring citizens for tomorrow’s world.
Kindergarten: Full-day and half-day kindergarten.
Kindergarten Round-up: Wednesday, January 27, 2010 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.
Childcare: Before/after school care on site provided by Vermont Hills Family Life Center.

Before and after school programs
- A wide variety of before and after school enrichment and activity programs are available, including band and string instrumental music programs, foreign language programs, Mad Science and our award-winning Chess Club. (Some activities are provided by outside organizations through civic use of Rieke Elementary.)After school childcare is provided on site through Vermont Hills Family Life Center and off site through Fulton Park Community Center and Portland Jewish Academy (bus transportation provided.)

Student learning environment
- Rieke is characterized by warm, child-centered teaching and learning with emphasis placed on achieving social, emotional, intellectual and creative potential.
- Teaching staff at Rieke School use a variety of teaching methods to build success for each and every student. Support for children below benchmark is provided through specialized classroom strategies, as well as staff and volunteer tutoring. Children identified as Talented and Gifted are challenged by instruction at their rate and level and through special activities.
- An effective home/school partnership is integral to the success of Rieke School. As a team we work to provide a secure environment of mutual respect, cooperation, support and commitment.
- Full-day and half-day kindergarten options are available, focusing on developmentally appropriate yet challenging opportunities for student growth and involvement at Rieke School.

district curriculum, as outlined in curriculum frameworks.
Best practice is utilized through a balanced literacy
focus, Investigations math and process-oriented writing.
Hands-on experiences and active learning promote
academically challenging opportunities for every child. - Integrated instruction extends experiences in literacy, math, science, social studies, the arts, technology and multi-cultural education.
- Staff follow a vision that focuses on helping children become lifelong learners who are critical thinkers, self-directed, self-confident and responsible citizens.
Staff
- The Rieke staff is experienced, dedicated and committed to encouraging excellence while celebrating each child\'s unique talents and individual successes. Our half-time physical education specialist, music specialist and media specialist join an instructional team including a technology support instructor, educational assistants, school secretary, principal and fourteen classroom teachers. Rieke staff is integral to the school Site Council, which develops and implements the school improvement plan and vision for Rieke Elementary School.
Parent and family support
- The high level of achievement at Rieke is a reflection of the powerful partnership between home, school and community. An active parent community supports and extends opportunities for children through dedicated involvement in PTA, Site Council and Rieke School Foundation. Classroom and school volunteers are a key element to help build success for children everyday.
Special programs and features
- Rieke is a designated \"Oregon Green School\", focusing on environmental awareness. Students are inspired to conserve resources and reduce waste as well as learn ways to protect our natural environment.
- Opportunities for small group or individual interaction include Reading Buddies, Math Buddies, Writer\'s Tea Celebration and Math Challenge classes.
- An enriched program for visual arts education is provided through Art Attack! art curriculum and visiting artists’ residencies. Vocal music instruction during the school day is complemented by an after-school instrumental music program.
- Annual Science Fair, Art Fair and Family Math Night provide fun, educational activities for families.
- Frequent, all-school events build community and bring families together. Events include a \"Back to School\" picnic, Curriculum Night and Spring Carnival. The Rieke campus hosts the Hillsdale Farmers\' Market every Sunday.
