About:
Portsmouth Middle School is merging with Clarendon Elementary school to become a K-8 school beginning September 2007. Extensive planning is occuring throughout the 2006/2007 school year and community members are encouraged and welcome to participate in the planning, implementation and evaluation of this school reconfiguration.
Before and after school programs
- SUN school offers a variety of before and after school programs at various times throughout the year. Please contact the SUN school coordinator for current programs and applications.
Community partnerships
- University of Portland, Portland State University, Oregon State University, Schools Uniting Neighborhoods (SUN), Portland Schools Alliance, Touchstone, Chess for Success, House of Umoja, Urban League, Self-Enhancement Inc. (SEI), Oregon Council for Hispanic Development (OCHA), NW Family Services, Step Up and others.
Student learning environment
- With the advent of the academies, each student is enrolled in a small learning community where they have an opportunity to develop strong and personal relationships with classmates and staff.
- There are high expectations that students will learn and exhibit behaviors and characteristics that reflect those of contributing citizens.
- A student council is an avenue for students to learn and practice democracy.
Curriculum components
- Five academic academies support student learning:Academy A: Electives of art, music, pysical wducation and wellness.Academy B: Two 7th and two 8th grade self-contained classes in which teachers loop with their students.Academy C: Departmentalized content classes of language arts, math, science and social studies serving 7th and 8th grade students.Academy D: Content blocks, language arts/social studies and math/science serving 7th and 8th grade students.Academy E: Support services include English as a Second Language (ESL), Special Education and Extreme Reading Classes.
- Exploration of careers through the Pathways program with additional support through GEAR UP grant.
- Participation in Striving Readers grant allowing all teachers to be trained in similar supporting reading strategies to support student reading comprehension in all subjects.
- Portsmouth's community garden is a living laboratory for
Life science curriculum. Biology lessons are linked to
garden projects. - Supplemental educational services for all students who qualify for free or reduced lunch and tutoring services for all students.
Staff
- All staff members are appropriately licensed and highly qualified for their academic positions.
Parent and family support
- Although Portsmouth families may be involved in the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), Local School Advisory Committee (LSAC) and Site Council, this is a year of transition as the Clarendon and Portsmouth parent/family communities merge.
Special programs and features
- Partnership with University of Portland allows many Portsmouth students to connect with university students and visit their campus. Some University of Portland students take part in the MESA program and the annual science fair.
- Portsmouth has a school-based health clinic.
- Step-Up program is available to 8th grade students and provides them with additional academic support with the goal of moving on to high school and college.
