Testimonials
- Maplewood Elementary has a great feeling of community. This
is a place where I know my child will not only get the
academics necessary to prepare her for her future, but
nurturing surroundings; including a supportive principal. I
am just diving in as a parent of a kindergartner. We chose
Maplewood as a transfer (from just outside the boundary) for
these reasons and their developmentally appropriate
practices. We bought our home in the Wilson feeder pattern
feeling very confident in an area that valued academics and
the arts!
Parent of half-day kindergartener - Maplewood students are so fortunate to have experienced and
talented teachers, a wealth of involved parents, a wide
variety of learning opportunities and a community that
treasures this gem of a school in the heart of the neighborhood.

- Our vision: Maplewood School community teaches and challenges the whole child to achieve social, emotional, intellectual, physical and creative potential in a secure environment of mutual respect, cooperation, trust, support and commitment.
- Satisfaction Surveys from families, staff and students are all exceptionally positive and reflect a consistently healthy environment that balances changes and tradition.
- Computer lab and Internet access are available for all students.
- We approach each child as an individual with his/her own history, strengths and learning styles. Our goal is to give small school warmth with big school opportunities. Time is continually spent in examining WHO we are teaching, not just WHAT we are teaching.
- Older and younger students are teamed as Reading Buddies, peer tutors and serve as Conflict Managers and members of the Student Council; we create a family atmosphere where all members of the community take care of each other.
Curriculum components
- Enrichment classes, such as computer classes, music, PE and library are presented throughout the year and focus on integrated learning. Additional classes in music are offered during the school day in band, orchestra, strings and choir.
- Parent advisors coordinate our Student Council and our Green School activities. Staff supports features of the Lifeskills and the Steps to Respect curriculum, which emphasize social and behavioral skills..
- Maplewood\'s curriculum focus is evaluated on an ongoing basis to help determine direction, assess strengths and address the needs of the whole child. We follow district curriculum in reading, math, and science. We have been rated at the highest Oregon Report card rating for the highest categories (\"Outstanding\") the last two report cards.
- The School Improvement Plan is developed by the Site Council with input from staff and community. The focus of the plan is on achievement, parent involvement and holistic vision for our students. Our plan addresses the new state standards, as well as the district\'s Strategic Plan.
- Classes include science, art, technology and multicultural themes. Our Wild Woods outdoor education area and raised beds/gardens support environmental and biological learning.
- Artist-in-Residence program provides arts experiences for students; our Arts Literacy program, run by parents, helps students learn to critique, describe and appreciate the different disciplines of art.

Parent and family support
- Our school is well-known for outstanding parent support and involvement. Our parent volunteer coordinator is a very important key to matching your interests with the needs ofthe students.
- Parents serve on the PTA and Site Council and participate in teaching in classrooms and on a variety of committees and projects.
- Parent participation can be tailored to parent skills and interests. Examples include: teaching subjects of special skills or interests, tutoring through the Reading Friends Program, monitoring students on playgrounds or even just quietly supporting the class by clerical duties.
- Our Arts Literacy program, coordinated by parents, offers outstanding instruction to students through various artists. The coordinators arrange for training and materials for the parent volunteers, who then instruct each class in school.Come and see examples of their great work in our classes and front hallway.
Special programs and features
- Kindergarten for 2009–2010 includes 3 classrooms: two all-day classes, and one half-day. Our half-day students attend 4 days per week and do not attend on Fridays (we increased the time of attending each day to eliminate Fridays, as the typical half-day schedule is too short each day).
- Music: Kathy McNett teaches all children music instruction each week and is here half-time. She also coordinates our school choir, strings and band for 4th and 5th graders. Every other spring we formed our marching band to march in the Junior Rose Festival Parade.
- Our Reading Friends program trains, provides materials and recruits volunteers to work one-on-one with students to strengthen reading skills. Parents, neighbors and volunteers create this successful program for Maplewood students.
- Our outdoor Wild Woods includes natural plants and Outdoor Learning Center. Our Children\'s Garden has raised beds for each grade level to plant and monitor.
- Maplewood\'s Bookbaggers sleep-over in April in the school gym draws students and parent volunteers to an evening of reading and mini-classes each year. This long-standing tradition is coordinated by a parent committee.
- PE: We were able to obtain a state grant to fund a Full Time PE teacher for 08-09 to be added to our teachers\' trained skills as taught by a Nike, PE2Go grant in the prior three years. Ms. Jane Eggert adds to our recognition of the children\'s need for movement and learning life-long skills in recreation and physical activity.
- Computer classes in our computer lab offer all our students creative writing projects, enrichment of the class projects and opportunities to explore technological publishing. In addition to her teaching computer classes half-time, Elin Kordahl teaches full-time: half in the computer lab and half in the library, where she combines her technological expertise with her skills and passion for literature.
