About:
James John provides a supportive learning environment where teachers use a variety of teaching methods to challenge all students to learn and achieve. The curriculum helps students build awareness of community, understanding of individual differences and self-assessment skills. Students with diverse needs are served by a rich array of classroom and other resources, including a Special Education Resource Center, speech/language intervention, English as a Second Language instruction and a Talented and Gifted program. Students have access to a computer lab, as well as computers in classrooms, allowing them to work at their own pace to improve reading, math, writing and computer skills. A counselor is available to support students’ academic and social-skills development and provide counseling, consultation and referral services to students, parents and staff.
Before and after school programs
- James John Elementary School is a SUN School site. Weprovide a variety of after school activities, includingbasketball, chess, science, bike safety and fine arts. Wealso offer a study time for students, during which weprovide assistance.
Community partnerships
- We currently have partnerships with Experience Corps, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, SMART, Chess for Success and Adopt-a-Class.
Student learning environment
- Computers in each classroom for skill development, computer literacy and the writing process.
- Computer lab for all K–5 students to work at their own pacetoward reading and math skills.
- Counselor to provide support for students in academic and social-skills development. Services include counseling andconsultation to students, parents and staff. Communityliaison for services and referrals.
- Special Education Services for students in need ofEducational Resource Center (ERC) instruction or Speech andLanguage (S/L) intervention.
- A basic skills centered program emphasizing reading, visual and problem-solving math, the writing process and geography.The reading program integrates whole language, guidedreading groups and phonics, as well as staff-selected tradebooks.
Curriculum components
- Team teaching through "Buddies" program to facilitate student mentoring.
- Staff goal is to provide a supportive learning environment using a variety of teaching methods that recognize the different learning styles of students. Methods include reciprocal teaching strategies, the strategic teachingmodel, questioning strategies, cooperative learning,grouping strategies and multicultural-multiethnic awareness.Staff awareness of Best Practices in Teaching in support ofthe Principles of Quality Instruction. Principles includestudent awareness of the community, real-life application,understanding individual differences, self-assessment,meaningful construct, balance of skills with experience,access to technology and learning as a life-long process.
- Looping or follow-through model at 1st/2nd and 3rd/4th grades.
- Physical education instructor available weekly for grades K–5.
- Talented and Gifted (TAG) program uses inclusion model.
Staff
- Staff includes principal, 18 classroom teachers, 4 ESLteachers, 1 special education teacher, 2 literacy support specialists, 1 counselor, 1 librarian, 1 physical education teacher and several educational assistants. The certified staff have an average of 15 years of teaching experience.
Parent and family support
- Families support Homework Program for students in grades 1–5to develop home study skills.
- Volunteer Program: Family members and friends help withfield trips, classroom activities, school functions, specialevents and fundraisers.
- Parents involved in Parent Teachers Association (PTA),school Site Council and an active school volunteer program.
- An active Home and School Connection promotes activitiessuch as: Kindergarten Orientation, Open House, Grandparentsand Special Friends Day, Teacher-Parent Conferences, FamilyMath Night, Harvest Festival, Cinco de Mayo, World GamesNight, Family Reading Night, Promotion and Volunteer Tea.
Special programs and features
- Learn for Life program, Boy Scouts of America and resource teacher provided to teach a variety of thematic units thatfit into the school curriculum (grades 2–5).
- Student recognition program for students who are meeting theexpectations of the school and showing they are safe,respectful and responsible.
