Before and after school programs

Student learning environment
- All classes meet daily using an eight-period-day model.Language arts and social studies are integrated into a two- period block. In addition, each student receives one period daily of reading instruction.
- Counselors, support staff and teachers work closely with students in individual and small grade-level groups.
- Elective program offerings include Art I and II, Office/Library/Teacher Assistant, Cadet and Concert Band, Concert Choir, Computer Tech I and II, Drama I and II, French I and II, Spanish I and II and Journalism.
- Looping option for grades six and seven
- School Mission: We, the community of Robert Gray, encourage our students to strive for academic excellence and to think critically and independently; we address the educational, social and emotional needs of our diverse student population; and we provide a safe and stimulating climate to help students become confident, proud and successful. Our mission is to prepare our students to meet the challenges of the 21st century.
Curriculum components
- Advanced math classes are available for accelerated math students, including algebra for high school credit.
- CIM classes are offered to students who are in need of additional instruction in order to meet grade level CIM benchmarks.
- Staff use an interdisciplinary approach to target CIM benchmarks.
- Programs focus on coordination and integration of content area curriculum and expectations.
- Emphasis is on instructional activities and strategies that meet the needs of mid-level students.
Staff
- Approximately 35 teachers, counselor, student management specialist, library assistant, special education and ESL paraeducators and English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher.
- Touchstone Intervention Specialist Program, through theMultnomah County Dept. of Community and Family Services, provides an on-site case manager who works with students and their families. LifeWorks Northwest also provides families with support.
- Itinerant Special Education staff include school psychologist, speech pathologist and other support staff as needed.
Parent and family support
- Some of the many opportunities for parent involvement at Robert Gray include articulation activities, attendance calling, classroom volunteers, eighth-grade promotion, field trips, International Field Day Committee, media center volunteers, Multicultural Fair Committee, Arts Day Committee, Project R.E.A.C.H., Music Boosters club, office support, the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), PE Booster club, Reading Incentive Committee, assemblies, Run for the Arts, Site Council, Student of the Month celebrations and tutors.
Special programs and features
- Accelerated math including high school level algebra.
- Full-year French and Spanish classes that earn our students high school credit and prepare them to enter second-year foreign language in high school.
- Three full years of science life, physical and earth-Annual Science Fair in partnership with Oregon Health & Science University, hands-on labs, environmental projects
within the community, chemistry, physics, astronomy, meteorology, hydrology, geology, microbiology.
- Reading incentive through our school-wide reading emphasis. Students maintain reading logs and are recognized for their achievement.
- Talented and Gifted (TAG) program.
- Individual/small group counseling support.
- Our music programs include a marching band, choir, Panache (vocal ensemble), stage band (jazz band) and orchestra. Our students march in the Macy\'s Parade, the Jr. Rose
Festival Parade and participate in the solo and ensemble district-wide competitions and State Honor Band and Choir. They also perform throughout the community and participate in one out-of-state event each year.
- Drama presentations include several short productions each semester and art classes using various media.
- Before School Study Center coordinated by parent volunteers and After School Homework Club coordinated by SUN School with student tutors from Wilson High School.
- Learning Centers for direct service and consultation.
- English as a Second Language (ESL).
- All School Picnic for families and staff kicks off the school year. International Field Day and a schoolwide Talent Show end the school year.
- Field trips, assemblies, curriculum fairs, Reader-of-the-Month and Student-of-the-Month.
- Enrichment activities include Geography Bee, Spelling Bee,
Science Bowl, Lego Robotics and Chess Club. - Community service activities provide multiple opportunities for all students to engage in volunteer activities throughout the community.

- Gang Resistance Education Awareness Training (G.R.E.A.T.) for 6th graders.
- SUN (Schools Uniting Neighborhoods) after school classes for students and adults.
