Before and after school programs
- Before and after school opportunities are provided three ways: by private providers for a fee, by volunteers or through the Glencoe School Foundation. Activities may include: homework club, baton, chess and go club, intramurals, Jr. Great Books, jump rope club, habitat club, dance, drama and 5th grade band.
Community partnerships
- Glencoe has active business/community partnerships with the OASIS tutoring program, Portland Nursery, and the Urban League.
Student learning environment
- Community and parent volunteers give students one-on-one support.
- Warm, child-centered teaching and learning activities integrate arts with classroom instruction.
- Computer lab allows for whole group instruction in writing skills, keyboarding, skill-based instruction.
- Yearly Artist-in-Residence programs for K-5th students.
- Media Center equipped with technological research stations and Internet connection.
Curriculum components
- A wide variety of teaching methods encourage students with different learning styles.
- Annual Family Art and Science Nights.
- Total school is networked and connected to the Internetand online educational opportunities. Students use a computer lab for word processing, publishing and research.
- Artists-in-Residence provide unique art experiences at each grade level through the Young Audiences program and the Right Brain Initiative.
- Art Infusion program brings high-quality art curriculum and instruction into each classroom monthly. Annual Art Show celebrates this work.
- Phonics-based reading program in the early grades.
- Inquiry approach to science instruction supported by the annual Science Fair.
- Student publishing of writing emphasized at all grade levels.
- Students have twice weekly PE and weekly library classes.
Staff
- Glencoe\'s high-quality teaching staff includes English as
a Second Language, physical education and library. - Glencoe staff, characterized by solid experience and a strong continuous learning ethic, are energetic and committed to working with parents and students to reach high learning standards.
Parent and family support
- Parents are partners on school committees, including Arts Development, Glencoe Foundation, PTA and Site Council. The Art Infusion program involves parents in providing high quality art curriculum in every classroom.
- PTA provides fund raising activities, Ice Cream Social for all new families, Harvest Festival, the Family Dance and many family activities throughout the year, including Grandparents and Special Friends Day, Volunteer Appreciation, the Science Fair and Kindergarten Round-up.
- Glencoe volunteers provide many services to students and staff. Volunteers help in classrooms, on committees, in the library and in the work room. They provide clerical assistance, act as classroom resource speakers and serve in advisory and partnership roles throughout the school.
Special programs and features
- The Art Infusion program is parent led and trains volunteers to deliver high-quality art instruction to all students throughout the year.
- Back to School Night builds community and awareness early in the school year.
- Family nights provide fun, educational activities for families, extend instructional experiences for students and show the relevance of learning to real-life problems.
- Through Foundation fundraising, lectures on relevant parenting topics are offered throughout the year.
- Glencoe Arts Program provides at least one artist-in-residence at each grade level so that students receive integrated arts experiences.
- Annual Storybook Parade.
- Glencoe Nature Garden provides service-learning activities for students.
