Community partnerships
- George Middle School is a partnership-based school with over 40 active programs and organizations. SUN Community School oversees all partnerships. We welcome interested agencies to contact them at (503-916-5718 for information on how to get involved. Some of our fabulous partnerships include: Multnomah County School-Based Health Clinic, Health Educator and School Nurse, Oregon Council for Hispanic Advancement (OCHA), Self-Enhancement Inc. (SEI), Northwest Family Services, OSU Extension Service Pyramid Power Program, Asian Family Center, Native American Youth Association, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, LifeWorks, North Portland Youth & Families, Chess for Success. Student learning environment
- Students take two periods of math, two periods of language arts, one period of science, and one period of social studies as their core. Enrichment classes include English Language Development, Academic Support, PE, art, AVID, and technology.
- All students participate in technology education, which teaches them to use computers and software, as well as direct skills such as reading, math and writing.
- Students with special learning needs, such as ESL and special education students, are served using an inclusion model in regular and specialized classrooms.
Curriculum components
- Technology is used in all areas of the curriculum, from classroom applications and tools to direct instruction software. Homework and classroom assignments can be found
on teachers\' web sites at www.george.schoolloop.com. - Each grade is organized as a team with highly qualified teachers that know each student personally.
- Curriculum is modified to accommodate the learning needs of special students within regular classrooms.
- Writing workshops integrate assignments across the various curriculum areas.
- The advanced math program focuses on problem solving, real-world application and algebraic reasoning used at every grade level. Geometry and algebra are offered.
- A health educator and staff from the OSU extension office provide curriculum each week to students for healthy lifestyles.
Staff
- 25 classroom teachers, 1 counselor, 1 library assistant, 3 special education teachers, 4 paraprofessionals, 1 educational assistant, 1 technology assistant, 1 principal\'s secretary, 1 office secretary, 1 school nurse, 3 health clinic staff, 4 custodians, 1 SUN Community School site director and many outside service providers.
- Ongoing staff development ensures that instruction is relevant and rigorous.
Parent and family support
- George Middle School parents and students, as well as families from James John, Sitton and Rosa Parks Elementary Schools, are welcome to use the computer lab on SUN Community School days on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 4:00 to 5:00 pm.
- Family involvement is extensive through community-based partnerships and grant-funded activities.
- Family members help coordinate school activities such as school pictures, health screenings, classroom and library volunteer opportunities and field trips. Contact Tanya Spring at 916-6262 to volunteer.
Special programs and features
- George has an effective inclusion special education and a full-school Title 1 program. Free breakfast and afterschool snacks are served to all students.
- Students learn to use computers, and teachers use technology extensively in all classes.
- Our partnerships provide services to students that they would otherwise not have.
- Grants provide funding to improve school programs and facilities.
- George has a Multnomah County School-Based Health Clinic and an MESD nurse. Full-service health care is provided free of charge.
- George is one of the newest buildings in the school district and is a beautiful environment.
