Chapman School has a long tradition of excellence. Throughout the years Chapman has been recognized for its outstanding programs. Chapman received an "Outstanding" rating on the 2008-2009 Oregon state report card. Chapman was built in 1923 and features a beautiful auditorium with a balcony. The world's largest population of Vaux's Swifts makes its home in the Chapman chimney every year in late August and early September.

Before and after school programs
- Supervision Before and After School: Student supervision is not available before or after school. Parents should be mindful of school hours and make arrangements to ensure their child is appropriately supervised before and after school.
- After School Clubs: Math Club, Computer Club, Chess Club, Book Club and Garden Club.
- After School Fee-Based Classes:Young Players Acting Workshops, Young Rembrandts Drawing Programs, Chinese and Kids Like Languages Spanish and French classes.
- Friendly House: Friendly House provides before and after school care for many Chapman students. The Friendly Chaps program is designed to provide a positive before and/or after school experience for children and offers individual and group activities. The Friendly Chaps before school program operates from 7:00 to 7:50 AM. The after school program runs from 2:15, when school is dismissed, until 6:00 PM. Friendly Chaps operates Monday through Friday and provides childcare services during most school vacations and in-service days. Curriculum components
- Chapman kindergarten students receive a strong foundation for school through a full-day program that promotes literacy and math skills (fee-based program with limited scholarships).
- All students receive instruction with a music specialist twice each week. Many students also participate in chorus.
- A physical education specialist meets with students twice weekly to promote physical activity and to develop coordination and motor skills.
- Chapman students receive weekly library instruction from a full-time library assistant.
- A technology lab is well equipped with personal computers; all students have access and instruction in the use of technology.
- A Reading Buddies program encourages students of different grade levels to work together, build skills and form lasting relationships.
- Artists-in-residence supplement a strong arts curriculum.
- Guest writers are featured in school assemblies and classroom activities to inspire students to become proficient readers and writers.
- Junior Achievement classes are presented by local business leaders.
- Community and parent volunteers contribute hours of individual and small group targeted assistance to promote reading and math skills.
Staff
- Chapman has a dedicated and talented staff. Students are actively engaged in learning, and staff use current instructional strategies and best practices in education to promote higher-level thinking skills and focus instruction to meet the needs of all children.
- Chapman s faculty includes 20 regular education classroom teachers, one music teacher, one physical education teacher, three special education teachers, one library assistant, one computer lab assistant, and one principal. An English language learner teacher, speech pathologist, school psychologist and school nurse are part-time members of Chapman s faculty. Educational assistants and school secretaries provide important support services to all students at the school.
Parent and family support
- Active PTA, Chapman Site Council and Chapman Educational Foundation.
- PTA supported outreach programs for families in need.
- Family involvement is strongly encouraged and supported.
- Family members serve as volunteers in classrooms and the library, accompany students on field trips and tutor students.
- PTA sponsors several all-school events, and parents help coordinate school activities.
Special programs and features
- Friday mornings start with Round-Up assemblies during which students gather to celebrate Chapman. This community-building event provides opportunities for class performances. Parents and community members are welcome to attend.
- The Swift Family Picnic (September) celebrates the annualvisit of the Vaux’s Swifts to Chapman’s Chimney.
- Science-Math Festival (March) is designed to foster emerging scientists and mathematicians. Partnerships with OMSI, ESCO Corporation and dedicated parents and community members bring this hands-on, interactive festival to Chapman.
- All Chapman children have the opportunity to participate in magnificent musical productions.
- Art Ball is a major event designed to celebrate student work. All students work with artists in-residence. Projects developed with these artists, student writing and other student work is displayed at the annual Art Ball.
