Before and after school programs
- The Community Learning Center is an after school enrichment program offering students a wide variety of cultural, academic and recreational classes and clubs. All activities take place directly after the regular school day. Classes are offered at a minimal cost, some are free and scholarships are available. About 60 percent of students participate in classes, including Homework Club, Legos Club, Choir, Instrumental Music, Ceramics, Dance and Computers.
Community partnerships
- Portland Reading Foundation, OASIS Intergenerational Literacy Tutoring, Lewis and Clark College work experience tutors, Safe Routes to School, Market of Choice, Baja Fresh and Starbucks are all supporters of the Capitol Hill School Community.
Student learning environment
- School Improvement Plan focuses on improving reading, math, writing and achievement. Climate goals include diversity and student service.
- Strong emphasis on the arts with art education in the classrooms, Artist in Residence at each grade level, and Run For the Arts to support art literacy. \"First Thursday\" each April featuring student work and an evening gallery walk.
- Strong focus on the school community, where all students are safe and parents are encouraged to be involved.
Curriculum components
- Technology is available to all students through the use of classroom computers, the computer lab, the portable lab and library computer stations. Students have the opportunity to work with PC and Mac formats and have Internet access. Wireless capability exists throughout the school building.
- Buddy classrooms team up older and younger students for projects and activities.
- Reading, writing, speaking and art are integrated into science and social studies thematic units.
- Art Curriculum K-5th grade develops appreciation and understanding of artistic process and art criticism, coupled with a school wide Art show, \"First Thursday at Capitol Hill,\" every April.
Staff
- Our experienced, child-centered staff focus on building basic skills, providing accelerated, rigorous curriculum and individualized support for all students. We strive to provide a challenging, high quality education while also instilling a love of learning.
- Ongoing staff development activities provide training to support effective instructional strategies that enable students to meet district and state standards and benchmarks. Formal and informal assessment tools are used to analyze student work and data that informs instruction.
Parent and family support
- Active parent groups including PTA and Site Council plus numerous parent involvement activities, groups and committees.
- Parents tutor in reading and math and assist with art, drama, and special interest activities.
- Parents and other volunteers give an average of 500 volunteer hours each month.
- Families support the annual Carnival, Silent Auction, Family Night, School Picnic, Run for the Arts, Book Fair, School Savings, Project Second Wind and many more.
Special programs and features
- Our library is staffed by a part time library assistant. All classrooms participate in library class once a week learning library skills and checking out books.
- The computer lab and computers in every classroom support student learning.
- Music and physical education programs involve all students.
- Multnomah Early Childhood Education Program provides a pre-school experience for students with learning disabilities and non-disabled 3- and-4-year-olds.
- Full-Day kindergarten with the half-day option is offered.
