Before and after school programs
- Basketball, soccer, baseball, foreign language classes, chess, Scouts, other youth groups (most of these are not school sponsored, but many happen in the school).
Student learning environment
- School mission: Together we will empower students to become self-directed, life-long learners and contributing members of the community.
- We believe Bridlemile is a partnership of students, staff, parents and community.
- Bridlemile staff and parents have high expectations for all students. Achievement levels at the school reflect those expectations. Affective education balances the emphasis on academics.
- Bridlemile will be a safe, secure learning environment.
- We recognize that children are unique with different learning styles and levels of ability.
- All individuals will be provided with activities that further academic achievement.
- A computer lab is available for working with small groups on projects and total class instruction on computer use.
Curriculum components
- English as a Second Language (ESL) children represent several countries and languages, bringing a richness to classrooms and the school as a whole.
- Students are in flexible groups in math and reading to meet their learning needs.
- A high percentage of Bridlemile students participate in the Talented and Gifted (TAG) educational opportunities within their regular classrooms and, at times, pull-out activities. In addition passport club (geography), Battle of the Books, Lego Robotics, and Destination Imagination help all students stay challenged.
- All students at Bridlemile have music and PE twice a week, and library once a week with teachers endorsed in those areas.
Staff
- Teacher turn-over is low and the majority of the staff brings seasoned experience to their programs.
Parent and family support
- PTA (involves many committees and activities), Site Council, and Bridlemile Foundation.
- Bridlemile is rich in parent involvement. Parents and family members make classroom presentations on careers/special interests, help out on field trips, give classroom assistance, tutor, prepare materials, help supervise lunch/recess times and are instrumental throughout the school program.
- Fundraisers sponsored by the PTA provide materials, field trips, computers and many other amenities and necessities for the school.
- The Bridlemile Foundation raises funds to provide additional school staff beyond the funding of the Portland Public School staffing allotment.
- The community provides a wide range of activities for involvement through the PTA, and Foundation. Each year we have a picnic, carnival, Art Sale, Book Fair, plays produced by parents for the students as well as participation in the garden and other projects.
Special programs and features
- Special programs include Arts Attack, Writers Cafes, writers-in-residence, artist/performer residencies at each grade level, and Young Audience assemblies.
- Community outreach programs serve Bridlemile families in many ways including clothing outreach, food baskets, and other assistance as needs arise.
- Guided tours are given as needed. Please schedule by calling the school office several days in advance.
- Several classrooms have buddies or peace pals, matching younger classrooms with older ones, to read together, tutor, and build friendships by working together on
projects. - Band and strings programs are available for 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students. Recorders are used in 3rd through 5th grades.
- No TV Week is an annual event that encourages students and families to give up TV watching for one week. Many activities throughout the week at the school provide options for families.
