About:
Abernethy is located in historic Ladd's Addition in southeast Portland. The small school atmosphere fosters students' social, emotional,physical and intellectual growth to help them develop positive attitudes, self-esteem and lifelong learning skills. Abernethy brings art into the school with residencies, performances and a variety of experiences. In addition, physical educations is provided to all students with an emphasis on lifelong wellness. Experienced staff, parents and community volunteers work together to create a positive, welcoming learning environment with high academic standards. The year round calendar offers seasonal garden learning opportunities as well as a continuous learning environment. Our goal is to help each child become a responsible and productive citizen, working to achieve his or her academic potential while developing an understanding and acceptance of others.

Kindergarten: We have two full day programs.The 1/2 day students are included with full day.

Community partnerships
- David Evans and Associates (Civil Engineers), Starbucks,
New Seasons, Lippman Company, Hankins Hardware, Hot Lips Pizza, Grand Central Baking, and Washington Mutual.
Grand Central Baking donates fresh bread three times a week for sandwitches and David Evans Inc. supports the classrooms with weekly volunteers.
Student learning environment
- A varied community of learners with different needs and abilities, with staff committed to honoring the continuous development of the whole child.
- Opportunities that promote the respect, understanding and acceptance of differences and backgrounds of students and families that are part of our school, neighborhood and community.
- Students are continuously evaluated using multiple data sources such as anecdotal records and samples of student work, as well as formal evaluation measures.
- Classrooms equipped with Macintosh computers to facilitate writing/publishing and use as learning tools. New multi-media computers in each classroom. Fully-furnished computer lab is across from the library.
Curriculum components
- A variety of teaching designs are offered: mixed-age rooms, combination grade-level room, and single-grade-level classroom to target students with different learning styles.
- Instruction through an integrated curriculum in reading, writing, math, science, fine arts, physical and career education.
- Artist In Residence program brings professional artists to Abernethy several times a year to work with students on special art projects.
- Talented and Gifted (TAG) instruction provided on-site, with Gifted Student Plans addressing classroom instruction and enrichment classes.
Staff
- Ongoing staff development this year focuses on student writing. The primary grades are teaching Kid Writing and the intermediate grades are involved in a special program called Phase 1 Writing.
- 2 all day kindergarten (am 1/2 day), 14 classrooms, specialists in PE, Music, Educational Resource Center, and Library.
Parent and family support
- Active PTA coordinates special projects, seasonal activities and fundraising.
- High percentage of Abernethy parents and community members volunteering in the classroom, on school-wide committees, and around the school.
- Families support the annual Carnival, Auction, Family Nights, School Picnic, Run for the Arts, Book Fair, School Savings, Project Second Wind, Field Day, Holiday Bazaar.
- Site Council consists of parents, staff and administration.
Special programs and features
- The small school setting makes Abernethy a supportive, nurturing place for students to learn.
Abernethy offers a program of continuous learning through the school year within the year round calendar. - Abernethy hosts a unique program called The Garden of Wonders. Through this program the students engage in garden experiences outside as well as an indoor garden classroom. Students learn about healthy eating which is supported with our scratch kitchen. Meals are prepared daily with fresh local produce in our kitchen. This focus on student wellness is also supported with a full-time PE teacher, Mr. Goodrich.
The Character Education Partnership is a program that supports schools, students and families to help young people understand, care and act upon core ethical values. Abernethy supports character education teaching students the life long guidleines of: trustworthiness, truthfulness, active-listening, no put-downs and achieving one\'s personal best. Character education helps develop students\'s emotional wellness.
